A government witness at the Tokyo Rose treason trial denies the Japanese used brutali ties or threats to force war pris oners and civilians to broadcast propaganda lor Radio Tokyo dur ing me war. Counsel for Los Angeles-born Mrs. Iva Toguri (Tokyo Rose) d'Aquino sought In vain yester day to win irom Lt. Col. Shig etsugu Tsuneishi an admission that brutalities and threats were used. Instead he snapped: "No such thing!" The painstaking three day cross-examination was part of the defense effort to picture Mrs. d'Aquino as a victim of war time circumstance, stranded in Japan at war's outbreak and forced to broadcast. . Mrs. d'Aquino is charged with traitorously broadcasting to Unit ed States troops in an effort to hurt their morale and thus im pede the nation's war effort. Tsuneishi, as the Japanese Ar my's representative, had direct supervision over several propa ganda programs, including "Zero Hour." Defense counsil Wayne Col lins did win from him an ad mission that the defendant might have been conscripted into the Army to do radio work if she had refused to do it as a civil ian. Later, Tsumelshl testified that a remark to that effect he once made concerned all employes of Radio Tokyo, not Mrs. d'Aquino in particular. Tsuneishi was asked If he had not once told a war prisoner broadcaster: "there is no fence around here, hut If you try to leave, you will come back In pieces." Government objections, as they have frequently, barred an an swer. . To another question, Tsuneishi said he did not know that Mrs. d'Aquino, as an alien national, was kept under constant police surveillance throughout the war, wim two agents assigned to her.
