O. c., wa one ot J7 similar groups competing for national championship at the Elks national convention in Cleveland, Ohio. First place and a prize of $500, was won by Fort Lauderdale, Fla., lodge 1517, with a score of 95.57. Second place went to Greeley, Colo., scor inq 95.40 points. Burton Heath, NEA Service staff writer and one of the deans of American reporters, was one of 14 promi nent U. S. newspapermen killed In the crash of a Royal Dutch airliner near Bombay, July 12, which took the lives of 45 persons. Mr. Heath, who traveled exten sively to dig for news all over the world as NEA's "reporter at large" since 1942, was returning from a month's assignment in Indonesia. A Pulitzer prize win ner In 193!), he was always more proud of his distinction as an "old school reporter" whose digging had brought him acclaim as an economics, labor and political specialist. Born In Lynn, Mass., In 18H8. he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1926 after beginning his newspaper career as an apprentice printer on the Bedford. Vt Opinion in 1913. He was with the Associat ed Press1 In New Haven, Conn., and New York for two years be fore Joining the staff of the New York World-Telegram In 1932. He had been editor and columnist for MeClure Newspaper Syndicate for a year before coming to NEA Service. During World War I lie served overseas with 102nd Infantry, 2(ilh Division, AEF, and after World War II wrote the story of a new kind of warfare as a witness at both of the Bikini atom bomb tests. Author of numerous magazine articles out side his regular assignments, Mr. Heath lived with his wife and two children at Darien, Conn. Michael Lydons Parents Of New Twins, Boy And Girl Twins, a boy and a girl, were born Wednesday, July 13. at Mercv Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lydon of 1318 Riverside Drive. Laurelwood. The boy weighed seven pounds two ounces and has been named John Michael. The girl, who weighed six pounds eight ounces, has been named Kathleen Agnes. Dr. K. K. Llndell had charge of the case. Mrs. Lydon Is the former Gene vieve Ness of Roseburg and Eu gene. Mrs. T. 11. (Agnes) Ness of Eugene, maternal grandmother of the twins, has been at the Lydon home for the last two months. GRASS FIRES SUBDUED City firemen were dispatched to two grass fires Wednesday. Both were extinguished before anv damage resulted, Fire Chief William "Dutch" Mills reported today. Smith as ad ministrator tf the estate of Wil liam Reldon Smith. Smith was killed Jan. 30, 1949, two miles east of Myrtle Creek, at the age of 43 years. Edmond Oliver Bushnell, charged witn Smith's murder, was found guil ty and sentenced to life Imprison ment In the Oregon State peni tentiary. Smith left an estate in Doug las County listed as real prop erty of a probable value of $250, and personal property of $330. Next of kin Is a daughter, Gladys, age 15, living at North Bend.
