8 Tht Newt-Review, Roieburg, Cre. Sat,. July 9, 1949 Castaway Experience Told By Bruce Elliott; Boat Is. Beached On Winchester Bay Being a castaway is certainly not the most pleasant way of spending one's time, says Bruce Elliott. He ought to know. He was a castaway for six hours on the cold, windy Deacn oi Win chester Bay, after his boat was hlnwn ashore. But being a castaway was only part of an interesting, if not hazardous and unpleasant, ex perience of the local sportsman and Penney Store manager last Saturday. It might as well have been Friday the 13th, for all his unluckv breaks, he indicated. Elliott's story goes back to his long winter and spring prepara tion for a boating and fishing trip on Winchester uay. wnn boat and equipment in fine or der, he and his wife headed coastward. Hunti Deao Water Arriving at Winchester Bay, they pitched their tent, and El liott attempted to find a place to launch his boat. The tide be ing out forced him to drive to deep water at Gardiner. He fig ured he could make it down the bay in about three hours. He traveled a couple hours on ly to learn he was in the wrong estuary and that it was necessary to return and go through Reeds port to reach his destination. He atiempiea lo j.uuuw a. imga uui much older "crate" down the bay, but found his own late model, but smaller craft, couldn't keep up. Soon he found himself going over, a shallow sand bar, and he nearly burned out his clutch. He was still able to navigate under a considerable handicap. Wind Severs To add to his difficulty the wind began blowing more and more severely. He never rea lized the wind could blow so hard, he said. Finally his motor died, and he was blown by the severe wind onto the sandy beach. Here he waited more than six hours, attempting without avail to attract attention of passing boats. He started to walk out on some piling over the river, but the wind blew him off into the water. Wet and extremely cold, he went back to his boat and started to "dig in" for the night. Finally he attracted the at tention of some fishermen, who, after some persuading and "cross ing of their palm," towed him back toward Reedsport. Along the way they met the Coast Guard boat, whom his wife had sent out to look for him. In all his confusion Elliott said he left a $75 fishing rod and some air cushions on the c 25oo to 50oo -K down buys you YOUR OWN M HOMESITE Your choice of these desir able homeslte lots just $25 to $50 down, the balance on "ft easy terms.
