UP) When radio's summer season gets going full tilt, 80 vacation shows will be on display via the four networks. Most program absences prevail in July and August. Because more sponsors than usual are taking what radio men label a "hiatus," this year's re placement crop has shown a pro nounced Increase. An important share of them are musical and dramatic productions. By far the greatest number are being supplied by the networks, with less than a fifth by spon sors. Statistically, the figures are 67 by the networks and 13 ' by sponsors. As usual, a number of commercial shows go through the summer, but these are at a mini mum. A recapitulation has CBS pro viding 21 programs, NBC 17, ABC 15 and MPS 14. NBC sponsors are putting on ten replacements, CBS two and ABC one. UP) A motion to vacate the sentence given Joe Sam Walker, convicted of second degre murder in the slaying of University of Colo rado Coed Theresa Foster, was filed in District Court here Sat urday by Defense Attorneys Paul A. Ruston and James T. Burke. Clerk of Court Charles Snively receive- ine motion in ine man this morning and immediately notified Judge George H. Brad field in Greeley who has not yet set a date for hearing the mo tion. Walker was sentenced last Mon day to serve a term of not less than 80 years or more than lite in the state penitentiary after his motion for a new trial was de nied. In the motion filed today, Burke and Ruston asked that the judg ment and sentence be set aside and that "a more temperate and ve'"b! ti!'iij-nt and sen tence be imposed." Too Many Queens, Says Committee; Boy Chosen STAYTON, June 27. UP) There's getting to be too much royalty in these here parts, re ported the Santiam Bean Fes tival committee. What with rose queens, cherry queens, flax queens, berry queens and rodeo queens, the Santiam Bean Festival decided not to have a queen at all this vear. Instead, there will be a "jack of the beanstalk, a small ooy who will take part in all bean festival affairs. He vill be elected, like aueens. Jack's costume will consist of a ereen Robin Hood cap with red feather, green pullover shirt, green tight long trousers, green long pointed shoes, leather belt and a green cape. The festival is July 26 to 30. splurge to help fill out the sum mer schedule. It will run 45 min utes five times a week beginning July 4 to replace Beulah, Jack Smith and Bob Crosby while their sponsors are off for eight weeks. Warren Hull, once associated with Parks Johnson's Vox Pop, will be M. C. The telephone ques tions are to be based on popular recordings. There will be a jack pot, too. BRITTAIN SLACK Newi-Revlew Correspondent Members of the high school class ol the Sutherlin Christian Church Bible School were taken for a mystery ride Saturday eve ning by their teachers, Mrs. Ada Abeene and Bill Webber, who fur nished transportation. The group met at the church where they were blindfolded and put in Bill's truck. After a ride west of town, in which every ef fort was made to confuse them in the location and in directions tak en, the Ailnort Road-' vat tin. versed to the highway junction south, from there they followed tne nignway toward Sutherlin, finally unloading at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barnes, where the blindfolds were re moved. The Bible School pianist. Mrs. Bettie Abeene, was found there. and some time was spent in sing ing. Later, a game with Mrs. Barnes as leader was Dlaved'. From the tears streaming down the faces of some, one would have thought it was a sad affair. ice cream bars were passed out to me young toiKs. Then they climbed into the truck again and were taken back to town.
