10 Th Newi-Review, Roseburg, Ore. Sat., Jun 25, 1949 Greyhound Depots Equipped With Teletype Service At 8:15 a. m. today from San Francisco, President F. W. Acker man of Pacific Greyhound Lines sent the first message to Rose burg, officially establishing this city as a teleype station in the Pacific Greyhound network. The same message was also receiveu simultaneously at Portland, Sa lem, Eugene, M e d f o r d and Klamath Falls In Oregon, and in California at Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Long Beach and San Diego. Bakersfield will be added to the network June 30. Including the 15 cities where the new com munication equipment was in stalled last April, the Pacific Greyhound teletype network will now consist of 26 cities, It was re ported. This teletype Installation, ac cording to Mr. Ackerman, trans mits typewritten messages instan taneously to any point or points selected, thus keeping executives and supervisors in constant con tact with operations and person nel throughout the 26-city net- work 24 hours a day. Messages are transmitted over regular tele phone wires. Installations were made by The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. Control Of Operations The teletype system will be es pecially valuable for keeping in constant touch with bus schedules and their operation, Mr. Acker man pointed out. "For example," he said, "the chief equipment dispatch office in San Francisco will receive re ports from all cities on the net work. These reports will give the location and requirements of every bus on the road. If sched ules require additional buses, they can be dispatched without delay from the most convenient source. Limited schedule reservations for passengers can be made and auicklv confirmed. Road condi tions will be reported, and parts and supplies can be ordered and shipped promptly. Every phase of our operations will be speeded up by means of the teletype system. Many Employes Trained The bus executive stated that the operation of the teletype sys tem required the training of many Greyhound employees by experts of the Telephone Com pany. Additional personnel are now being trained for the new stations, he said, so that there will be a complete corps of oper ators to maintain the 24-hours-a-day service. Mr. Ackerman revealed that a study of Greyhound's communi cation requirements in other parts of the West is now being made, with the object of extend ing the teletype network to addi tional cities. He said that the company plans eventually to use teletype service throughout the entire tactile Greyhound system Funeral Services Held For Azalea Resident William Lee Curtis, 6!), who died suddenly last Tuesday eve ning, was born at Harrisburg, Feb. 24, 1880, and had been a resident of the Azalea vicinity Xor the last 14 years.
