Guides Without
License Busy At
Reedsport, Claim
By S. S. SMILEY
! News-Review Correspondent
State and local officers are
much perturbed over the alleged
"racket" that has developed In
the Reedsport vicinity recently by
unauthorized persons claiming to
be licensed guides and imposing
on s rangers.
Several such Instances have
been reported here, with a grow
ing feeling of resentment express
ed by out-of-town sportsmen at
being Imposed upon by unscru
pulous persons who collect their
fee, or part of It, in advance, and
then fail to show up as agreed or
prove to be totally unfitted for
the work they claim to be ex
pert at.
Sgt. Richard Miles of the State
Police has urged local men who
wish to act as guides to secure
the required state license. He and
his fellow officers will do "all In
their nower" to see that un
licensed guides are not allowed to
prey on unsuspecting tourists.
On the other hand, the best
method of controlling this prac
tice seems to be for tourists and
others wishing to employ a guide
to ask to see tne license, rather
than to trustingly take the word
of anyone who might claim to be
an experienced guide. ,
The Chamber of Commerce has
been asked to advise any person
wanting a guide to demand to
see his license before making any
arrangements to employ him.
State Police Officer Assigned
uincer Kennetn Curtis of the
State Police has been transferred
from Gold Beach to Reedsport on
a permanent basis, according to
Sgt. Miles, who Is In charge of
mis aisirict. uincer uurtls has
been located at Gold Beach for
two years. This transfer eives
Reedsport a three-man crew, Of-
ncer Jonnson having worked here
for a considerable time.

Milk Problems
Told At Hearing
EUGENE. June 24. OV
The milk control section of the
State Department of Agriculture
conducted a public hearing here
this week on the price of milk
and took down sworn testimony
u-om producers, aisirinutors and
consumers.
Many producers of milk for
the Eugene milk shed, which ex

Portland to the California line,
gave testimony before Melvin J.
Conklin, examiner for the sec
tion, that the price of butterfat
on the state's quota system
should be increased to encourage
better quantity and quality of
production.
Distributors of milk declared
that the status quo should be
maintained because of high op
erating costs and the high cost
of labor.
II. E. Carlson, representing the
Oregon Independent Retail Groc
ers Assn., testified that the re
tail grocers were Interested In
maintaining the present margin
ior retailers. ine minimum
margin for retailers on a quart
of milk is two cents and he main
tained that If it were not for
paper cartons, they would de
mand an Increase In their present
margin.
Several producers from the Mt.
Angel area which entered the
Eugene market about one year
ago testified that they were hav-

said producers In his area had
just finished taking pictures of
about 60 barns that were now
empty and many of which were
formerly producing grade A milk.
There were hints of a possible
change In the state's quota sys
tem for milk producers and dis
tributors during the hearing.
Conklin asked several who testi
fied what tliev would think of
basing production quota on a
nunnred weignt ot milk ratner
than on a butterfat content.
He explained that it would
tend to assure the quantity of
milk necessary for a given mar
ket area. The reaction of most
persons at the hearing was
favorable to such a change.
