Newt-Review, Roseburg, Ore Wed, June 22, 194 Eighty Men In Training At Annual School For Lookouts On Umpqua National Forest Annual guard training school for lookouts on the Umpqua Na tional Forest got underway-Tuesday morning at Woll Creek Train ing Camp on Little River. About 80 men are in attendants at the school this year. An orientation lecture on du ties of the Forest Service was given Monday evening when trainees gathered at the camp, by M. M. Nelson, forest super, visor. A motion picture on fire- lighting also was snown. Lookouts will be given instruc tion in the detection of fires and in suppressing them, and they will be shown the use of radio and telephone equipment. Fire suppression crew leaders also are being trained. Ray B. Hampton, fire control officer of the Umpqua Forest, . is in charge of the school. He is being assisted ' by district ran gers, assistant rangers, and guards. Representative of the regional forester at the school Is Jack Bowen, Portland. The school will be concluded Thursday afternoon with the an nual compass and pacing con test over a Jaid-out course. A : prize will be offered the man , who most closely follows the course. There will be athletic con '; tests, in which the men will buck logs, play baseball and vol leyball, and pilch horseshoe. The district placing highest In these contests, as well as in examina tions on regular training, will be awarded a plaque. Last year, the North Umpqua Ranger District, with headquar ters at Glide, won the plaque. Nelson said that the Wolf Creek Training Camp has a new cook house this year. Roof of the former cook house caved in un der heavy snows during the win ter. The previous mess hall at the camp was destroyed by fire about two years ago. The guard school is again meet ing at Wolf Creek after two years at Camp Steamboat on the North Umpqua. Wolf Creek Training Camp was occupied by a construction crew for two sum--mers, during work on the Little River Road, Nelson explained. VITAL STATISTICS Marrlaga License! He is survived by his widow, Lucy Dimmlck LaRaut; a daugh ter Kathleen Wrenn of Minne apolis, Minn.; two sisters, Ida V. Smith and Ethel M. Lewis of Eugene. He also leaves seven grandchil dren, Robert Wrenn, Lt. Althea Luttrell, Alleen Loomis, Alta Bartram, Wilma Moskal, James Narcisse LaRaut, and Verna Lee LaRaut, and five great-grandchildren, Ralph Loomis Jr., Eddie and Jimmle Moskal, and Char lotte and Linda Bartram. Narcisse LaRaut was the father of the late Vernon LaRaut of Wilbur. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 Thursday, July 23, at the Wilbur Cemetery. A veteran of World War 11, William E. (Dutch) Mills will succeed Roy O. Young as post commander. Mills has served as first vice commander during the past year. In the election conducted at the regular Legion meeting last night, Mills' opponent was George Jackson, veteran of World War I, who has been the post's sergeant-at-arms the past year. Other officers elected Include: Harold Lentz, first vice com mander; Robert Marshall, second vice commander; Erwin Short, adjutant; vie J. Micelli. finance officer; Bruce Mellis, three-year term, House Committee; Frank Hammersmith, Leonard Riley, and George Jackson, Executive Committee. He is married and the father of two young sons, aged 2V4 years and six months. Prior to becoming Roseburg's fire chief June 1, Mills had been a member of the Roseburg Volun teer Fire Department. Robert Dollar Mill At ' Glendalc Reopens The Robert Dollar Co., Glen dale's largest industrial plant, re opened Thursday, June 16, after a 2V month shut down for repairs and remodeling. Work during the early part of the week was term ed a "shakedown operation" to make adjustments and minor alterations where equipment re quired it. However. Mr. Studley, plant superintendent, emphasized that the mill was now back on produc tion and that output was steadily climbing. He hopes that the plant will be at peak production within 10 days, after some un finished jobs are done and the crew gets used to handling the new equipment.
