Oregon's sharp decrease in 1949
traffic deaths gained momentum
during May with a tentative total
of 25 fatalities compared to 44 in
the same month last year. Secre
tary of State Newbry reported.
The year's death toll to date
stands at 96, a reduction of 35
per cent from 149 at the same
time last year. This figure is the
lowest since 1944, when traffic
volumes were less than half their
present level, Newbry said.
Only three of the May fatali
ties occurred in cities, two in
Pendleton and one in Medford.
Portland and Multnomah county
were death-free .for the second
consecutive month.
"Although the drop In deaths
is most spectacular, it is equally

Alarm Calls Firemen,
Drunk Gets Their Feast
WASHINGTON, June 14.-W)
Mix firemen, fried chicken, an
alarm and a drunk and you get a
little story like this:
The men of No. 2 truck com
pany were sitting down to a fried
chicken dinner when the fire
alarm sounded. They dashed off
to answer the call of duty.
It was just a small fence
blaze. And they were back in
30 minutes, hungrier than ever.
But all that was left of the chick
en dinner was a neat pile of
bones.
A block away a drunk was
weaving his way happily until
the firemen caught him and
noticed grease on his face and
hands.
He pleaded guilty to intoxica
tion in municipal court yester
day, and Judge Myers suspended
his sentence, as he does with
most drunk suspects who come

Oakland Oaks
Edge Elkton In
10-lnnirtg Game
Hoot Gibson's Oakland Oaks
defeated the Elkton Elks, 10-9 In
a close 10-inning battle that saw
the Oaks come from behind a
9-7 deficit in the ninth inning at
Elkton Sunday afternoon.
Two Oakland runs In the ninth
tied up the score, then in the
10th Plueard singled and stole
second. He went to third on a
passed ball, and scored on Man
ager Gibson's single.
The game tied at 6-6 in the 6th
inning, after Elkton had built up
a solid five-run lead in the initial
inning on four hits and three
Oaks errors.
DeGroot then settled down and
scattered Elkton batters' remain
ing hits. For Oakland, Linton's
triple in the fifth with the bases
loaded helped cut down Elkton's
lead to b-b.
Elkton's Bob Cowbrough hit
three for five and Parks con
nected two out of three times.
Sunday, June 19, the Elks
travel to Florence. Other league
games include Junction City at
Oakland and Creswoll at Mcken
zie Bridge.
