HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING
THURSDAY AFTERNOON
The Elgarose Comfort Club
held a very enjoyable meeting
Thursday afternoon at the home
of Mrs. Leora Andrews with Mrs.
Clarice Brown, co-hostess. Mrs.
Andrews, president, conducted the
meeting.
Mrs. Thelma Hanson installed
the new officers for the year and
who include: Mrs. Leora Andrews,
president; Mrs. Connie Showers,
vice-president; Mrs. Barker, secre
tary, and Mrs. Clarice Brown,
treasurer.
Plans were made, for the an
' nual club picnic to be held at
Umpqua Park, July 17.
Miss Charlotte Sand won the
door pri7.e. Visitors present were:
Mr. and Mrs. John Hulsebus,' Mrs.
Clara Edman and children, Linda
and Joe; Mrs. Lilly Tomnson and
Mrs. Cody of Ontario, Calif.
At the close of the meeting

Band Presents
First Concert

Wednesday evening of last
week, the Sulherlin school band
gave a concert at the school gym
nasium under the direction of Cur
tis Winders. The band was organ
ized about four or five months
ago and only three of its members
had ever played an Instrument be
fore. An exceptional program was
given. Much credit is due Mr.
Winders for the hard work and
time he lias "iven and also the
band members who have worked
and practiced so diligently at
home.
Two guest musicians from the
Christian Bible Academy at Can
yonville and one from Oakland as
sisted with (he program.
Mr. Winders delighted the
audience with Ilia explanation o(
the difference between the violin
and the fiddle. Two violin solos
were played by Mr. Winders, ac
companied at the piano by Mrs.
Howard Magill, which were en
Joved by all.
The 'Parent Teachers Associa
tion members voted last fall lo
have music as their project and
as a result the hand was organized
and part of their dream was real
ized when the band appealed be
fore the -public last Wednesday
evening.
After the concert cake and ire
cream wore served lo tile mem
bers of the band and their parents.
Mrs. Kenneth Briscoe was In
charge.
New Military Pay Bill
Undergoes New Paring
WASHINGTON, June 9 .T
A House Armed Services Sub
committee Wednesday approved
the new military pay bill after
paring another $68,000,000 off of
an already sharply sliced sched
ule tor pay raises.
The subcommittee knocked out
a proposed increase of $3 a
month in the S42 subsistence al
lowance now drawn by officers.
This allowance is given in addi
tion to the one granted for an
officer's family quarters.
POLIO CANCELS FETE
EVERETT, Wash., June 9.
(iTl Marysvllle's annual straw
berry festival and its attendant
activities slated for Friday and
Saturday was ordered canceled
Wednesday by the committee in
charge of arrangements.
Cancellation was ordered after
conferring with Dr. H. L. Mc
Martin, county health officer,
who advised this step be taken
after being Informed that a fifth
case of polio had occurred In the
community.
Four other cases have occurred
in the Marysville district this
year, resulting in two deaths.
