Boy Blind Since 3 Wins Highest University Award IWed., June 8, 1949 The News-Review, Roseburj, Ore. 5 RENO, Nev., June 7. .T The highest scholastic award 61 the University of Nevada went to a student totally blind since the age of three. Bonifacio Yturbide, 21-year-old major in political science, won the university's Hera gold medal with a straight "A" average in his four years of college. He received the award at commencement. Dean Frederick Wood of the Arts and Sciences College said it was the first perfect record In his 17 years at the university. When Yturbide was three years old he and his mother became vio lently ill after eating toadstools, mistaken for mushrooms. She re covered without lasting effects, but the boy has been blind since. Doctors said the poison apparent ly destroyed the optic nerves. Yturbide attended schools for the blind at Stockton, Calif., and Salem, Ore. After a year at the Oregon State School for the Blind, he attended public high school at Salem for a year and finished high school here. EXCLUSIVE PORTLAND, June 8. (.T) Twelve men were arrested here Monday for going into a city park without a woman. One of the men was 78 years old. The park Is Portland's "Wom en's Park" a block-square green set aside for women.
