It takes all kinds participants and prizes both to t
make "Queen for a Day" the remarkable program it Is. You
can say that again and again to emcee Jack Bailey, heard
11:30 a. m. week-days. The chosen "Queens" are by no
meant all quietly living housewives. ' One, for example,
was a spinach Salter In a canning factory. Another was a
92-year-old woman who was flown from Hollywood to San
Francisco to ride a buckboard at a rodeo. And too, there
have been a Hopl Indian Queen, a woman minister, and
German war-bride.
Requests of potential "Queens" no longer floor Jack, but they
still keep him wondering. For example: "My ears stick out. I want
them fixed:" "I need a cowbell to get in the cows." "I'd like an ad
ding machine for my rabbit farm." "A lamb to keep grandma's
lawn mowed." "An electric refrigerator. My husband's an iceman
and won't buy me one." Then there was the. Queen who asked for
some new clothes-Mnd a husband. She got the clothes and on her
return home to her Inglewood, Calif., home, received a telephoned
marriage proposal from a business man in Zion, 111. She accepted.
In it's first three years, it was estimated that "Queen for a Day"
had given away 2,349 bouquets of roses, 287 radio-phonographs, 116
electric ironers, 212 stoves, 178 vacuum cleaners, 374 table lighters,
162 coffee-makers, 203 washing machines, 154 sets of aluminum
ware, 901' blouses, 463 bottles of perfume, 489 pearl necklaces, 453
pairs of shoes, and 523 cameras. "And that, says the Mr. Bailey who
knows that it takes all kinds of people and prizes, "is only the be
ginning."
Tonight at 7:15, the "Sammy Kaye Showroom" will
feature for Its musical selections, "That Certain Party,"
"Whispering Water," "Sweet and Lovely," "A, You're Ador
able," and "Four Winds and the Seven Seas." At 8 tonight,
a 40-year-old spinster finds the man she wants .to marry,
but believes him to be In lethal danger from his hermit
brother. When George Valentine Is called in, he comes up
with some surprising discoveries. The drama is titled
"Death in .Blue Jeans."
