Everyone had a fine time and a good sum. of money was raised with which to buy school lunch-room equipment. JoAnne Matthews was selected carnival queen, and she chose Royal Crume as her king, to reign for 6ta evening. Judges for the various contests were Justice of the Peace Nina Plot zold of Canyonville; school prin cipal, Mr. Childress of Days Creeki Stanley Williams of Med ford, and Mrs. Burr Inscrop of Redding, Calif. Best costumes wer chosen with Mrs. Louis Thomason tak ing the honors as a pioneer woman. Charles Collins, In buck skins, took the men's first prize. The judges had a difficult de cision to make In all cases, as the costumes were varied and original, especially the children's. .Nora Lee Crume took the qlder girls' best costume award while Sandra Andrews took the young er girls' first prize for a cos tume appropriate to the spirit at the '49-cr carnival. Young Steve Charters .dressed as a min er carrying his pack and gold pan took the boys' award, and the finest and homeliest Ret of whiskers ever Reen In "these here hills" were worn by George R. Akor Jr. Mrs. Oliver Bratten of Drew carried home the beautifully dressed doll, and others ntlcnd Ing the carnival returned to their homes laden with gills and sou venirs. The committee In charge of the festivities promise a big ger and better carnival for the spring of 1950 and already plans are being made for Tiller's an nual school carnival. As many as 50 different copper wheels, ranging from Inch to 4 Inches in diameter, are used to engrave a design on American Handmade glassware. Coulombe, 22, hold hands in St. Benedict's Center, a Catholic laymen's school at Cambridge, Mass. They claim they war denied permission to wed by Catholic authorities in Boston because of their association with the school which has been for bidden to Catholics. They have appealed to the Vatican. The school was closed to Catholics by the Archbishop after its di rector, Rev. Leonard Feeney, was disciplined for speaking in support of three instructors discharged for accusing Boston Col lege of teach "heresy." UP) This' is Rose Festival week in Portland, with the four-day pub lic celenratlon Beginning Wednes day night and stretching through Sunday. Coronation ceremonies for queen-elect Joyce Sommerlade will be staged Wednesday night in the Multnomah civic stadium. A territorial band jamboree, com priced of music units from towns in the old Oregon country, will be a Thursday night feature. The grand floral parade will be Fri day, followed by the rose show awards and the queen's ball at the Masonic tomple. Saturday the junior rose festi val court and parade activities will take over the spotlight. The senior court moves to Mount Hood for a Saturday night dance and the Sunday golden rose ski tournament. EXAMINER DATED A driver's license examiner will be on duty in Roseburg Thursday and Friday, June 9 and 10, at the City Hall between the hours of 9 a. m. and 5 p. m., according to an announcement from the secre tary of state's office.
