Half Of Slash
In Foreign Aid
WASHINGTON, May 27. (.
Heeding a plea by President
Truman, the House Thursday re
stored half of the $150,000,000 cut
from a foreign-aid bill by its Ap
propriations Committee. The vote
was 120 to 39.
It voted to give $925,000,000 for
government and relief in occu
pied areas instead of the $850,
000,000 recommended by the Com
mittee. The President had asked
for $1,000,000,000. After the Com
mittee cut he said the $850,000,
000 would not be adequate.
Earlier House members an
nounced agreement to an admin
istration proposal to let the Eco
nomic Cooperation Administra
tion operate during the next year
on almost as much money as
President Truman requested.
The agreement permits the
money to be spent in a shorter
period than the Committee had
proposed.
"We will not oppose the amend
ment," Republican Leader Martin
told newsmen. "As a matter of
face, we lavor it."
