R. H. S. Band Will Feature
Unique Novelty Numbers At
Rose Festival In Portland
Almost nlphtly rehearsals are
scheduled by I he Rosebui ft High
School band prior to leaving for
Portland and Ihe Rose p'eslival

A. Ricketls. The festival dates
are June 9. 10 and 11.
Eighty band members, their
number augmented to nearly 1(H)
by chaperons, bus drivers, and
others scheduled to make the
trip, will leave Roseburg Wednes
day, June 15, at 5:30 a. m. Kx
peeling to arrive in Portland In
the early afternoon, the students
have been granted permission to
parade through the Portland
streets, In and out of the principal
business houses, riding the esca
lators, and all the time playing
music on their instruments.
The big event will he the Thurs
day night territorial band jam
boree, featuring maor bands
from the Pacific Northwest in a
gigantic performance In Mult-

bands from ali the Portland high
schools, Hutle, Monl., The Dalles
drum corps, and bands from Klam
ath Kails and La Grande in Ore
gon, and several large Washing
ton schools
The band Is rehearsing several
numbers or stunts to perform in

band will be given 12 minutes,

"Around the clock In Roseburg,"
in which the bandsmen will form
a huge clock, with hands moving,
all to the tune of "As Time floes
By. Next a novelty number of
milking a cow to the tune of
Old Low Hand, will be pre
sented. "Cut Down thj Old Pine Tree"
is the theme of the next num
ber. A log will be formed and
sawed in two. sawdust burner
will next be formed. As the stadi
um lights are turned off, the
musicians will have fiotu-eseent
tape on their hats to shine in
the dark, and smoke will shoot
nut of Ihe top. The song "Smoke
Gets in Your Kyes" will be played.
A similar idea will be used in
the final formation of a house,
with the music to be "A Perfect
Day.!'
The big festival parade will be
Friday morning, and the band will
also participate. Then to com
pensate for their long periods of
drill and performance. Ihe hand
members will spend Saturday at
Janlzen beach.
During their slay In Portland
Ihe sludenls will be nuartered at
Lewis and Clark College.

Reed urged purchase of U. S.
savings bonds. He pointed out
that labor turnover is a contribut
ing factor to high business over
head costs. Although consider
able bookkeeping would be in
volved, employers should urge
employes to purchase bonds by
payroll deductions to tide them
over periods of low Income, when
they might look for other em
ployment, Reed declared. Em
ployers would then be saved the
cost of training new help.
One of a group of Toastmasters
volunteering to speak for the
bond drive, Reed was Introduced
by Rod K'evue, of Ihe Junior
Chamber of Commerce, sponsor
of the drive in Roseburg.
.Miss Davis, Toast mistress vol
unteering to speak for the Amr
ican Legion poppy sale, said the
local committee hopes to sell
"twice as many" as last year. She
pointed out that Ihe more pop
pies sold this year, the more thai
disabled veterans will be able to
make for sale next year. "Let's
see that we all wear a poppy Kri
dav and Saturday," she urged.

Woman Files
Damage Suit On
Assault Claim
Montana Miller Jennings has
filed a new complaint in Circuit
Court against H. H. Miller as
the result of a beating she alleges
the defendant administered to
her on Aug. 5, 1948. A previous,
ly filed suit was ordered dis
missed by Judge Carl E. VVimbei
ly, upon motion for voluntary
non-suit of the attorney for the
plaintiff, and the new complaint
was immediately filed.
The plaintiff" asks general
damages of $3,000, loss of income
of $600 from her business, while
she allegedly was recovering
from her injuries, and $5,000 ex
emplary and punitive damages.
She alleges that the defend
ant "wrongfully, unlawfully and
violently aid assault and batter
the plaintiff . . . threaten the
plaintiff with a gun, and with
his fists did beat, bruise, wound
and 111 treat the plaintiff, and did
strike her on and about various
parts of the body and more es
pecially on and about her face,
and thereby did blacken her eyes,
bruise, discolor and cut open her
face; all without provocation or
cause."
She claims the facial cut re
mained open nine weeks, and left
a permanent scar, that she was
sick for two months and suffered
"great bodily pain and discom-
Russia Orders Boost In

MOSCOW, May 27.-(JI-So-viet
Russia ordered yesterday a
boost of 50 to 100 percent in
delivery of meat, milk and other
animal products to the state in
the next three years.
At the same time the Commu
nist Party newspaper Pravda
said a large amount of the live
stock now being delivered is in
adequately fattened and the per
centage of hogs and chickens is
too small.
