12 The News-Review, Roieburg, Ore. Fri., May 27, 1949 Co-insurance Explained In Reply To 'Inaccuracies' As To Oregon Status An nrtlnlA K, Tamils Thrnchar NEA Syndicate writer, appear ing in ine iNews-leview may reporting on ire insurance, con tained inaccuracies insofar as insurance in the State of Ore gon is concerned, local insurance dealers report. Thrasher wrote principally of co-insurance and inability to col lect full value losses. Co-insurance, Roseburg deal ers explain, is written only on business property and more es pecially on stocks of merchan dise rather than buildings. It Is not written on dwellings. Charles M. Emery, speaking for local dealers, said that not to exceed one percent of the poli cies carry the co-insurance clause. "The writer makes the state ment that if a person were pay ing for $15,000 insurance on a $12,000 valuation and had a loss he could collect only 80 per cent of the $12,000, or $9,600,'' Emery said. "The facts ate that the 80 per cent clause seldom is used. Most business property is insured at 90 or 100 per cent. But, in the case cited by Thrasher, the total amount of the loss would be paid, whether the building were com pletely or only partially dam aged. Co-Insurance Explained Emery explained that under the co-insurance plan a person guarantees to carry Insurance of a specified proportion of value, sometimes 90 per cent but usually 100 per cent of true value. Norm ally the rate charged drops to Linfield College Choir Dated At Baptist Church Concert by the a cappella choir of Linfield College, McMlnnville, will be presented at the First Baptist Church Sunday, May 29, at 4 p.m. The choir is stopping over briefly in Roseburg while traveling to the Northern Bap tist Convention at San Francisco next month. M. from the American Conservatory of Music in Chi cago. A young, gifted conductor and voice Instructor, Eschbach re ceived his voice training from Mrs. Samuel Wright, his (rain ing In theory from Leo Sowerby, and his organ instruction from Edwin Arthur Kraft. He has been at Linfield since 1945. Featured at soloists with the choir this year are Barbara Kel ly, senior voice major from Poca tello, Idaho; Ellen Louise Stone, senior biology major from Mc Mlnnville, and Leroy Flatt, fresh- FLOORING, SIDING and FINISH PAGE LUMBER & FUEL 164 E. 2nd Ave. S. Mr. Harry Turnbull, Guest Speaker The Public Cordiolly Invited To All Servicei lone-half when the contract calls for 100 per cent of true value, based on the theory that business firoperty, on which they type of nsurance Is written exclusively, seldom suffers a complete or to tal loss. If, however, the insured fails to live up to his contract and buys insurance covering only one-half total value of his building, he would be paid only one-half the amount of his loss. "Thus," said Emery, "if you owned a mercantile building in the city worth $10,000 and were insured at 100 percent of value, you could recover the full amount of a loss. But If, after contracting to keep the property 100 percent insured you secured only $5,000 worth of insurance, you could collect oniy one-half the loss." The agent who knows his business makes sure there is suf. flcent Insurance to cover the value of the property," Emery said. "During recent years, al most without exception, no credit has been taken for the coinsur ance, as replacement is too uncer tain. With large insurers, such as our school district, a certified ap praiser is employed to survey and value the property, and, without exception, in the event of a loss, the companies accept this ap praisal in making adjustments. "Alter tnirty years In the in surance business, I know that the companies are paying Just as always, according to the con tract, and, If anything, are more liberal in Interpreting the policy." Prophet Msgr. Joseph Beran, above, Arcimisnop of Prague and niRh est Czech Roman Catholic churchman, predicted he will be declared "an enemy of the work ing people" in the near future. The same forecast was made by Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary before his arrest and conviction on charges of black marketing and treason. man from Twin Falls, Idaho.
