Here's the puzzle: Po our freedoms include the freedom to urge the destruction of the very liberties we prize? Should free speech be permit ted to a Communist or Fascist who advocates a system that would destroy freo scecli? Should a place on the hallot go lo the man who, If elected, would abolish the ballot? The men who made our Consti tution were anxious to erect every possible safeguard for Indi vidual liberties. The postwar spread of Russian controlled communism has sharp ened this issue for us. Voices In Congress demanded that we out law the Communist Party, or at ea.st put heavy shackles on It. And now the Supreme Court has spoken its views. How Juiticet Differed The case involved a Catholic its 1 'J L. j Ralph Turner's water color entry County Fair, with the chance to win a championship. The court's anion, he said, "certainly fulfills the most ex travagant hopes of both right and left totalitarian groups who want nothing so much as to paralye and discredit the only democratic authority that can curb them in their battle for the stnvts." Hut Douglas Insisted that "the right to speak freely ... is one of the chief distinctions that sets us apart from totalitarian re Rimes." The court majority apiiears to believe we must keep our basic freedoms untouched, even at risk of their self destruction. Implicit in this view is the Idea that lib erty unhampered is healthy enough to light off undemocratic notions. Horan (R.-Wash.) Wednes day called for repeal of the 15 per cent wartime transportation tax, saying that avoidance of the levy through purchase of tickets in Canada is "another example of the folly of retaining excessive taxes after their purpose has ex pired." He said much business has been attracted from this country to travel agencies in Canada since the Canadian Government wiped out its la per cent travel lax. He told a reporter: "Now American travelers are mailing orders to Canadian bor der cities, getting tickets by re turn mail and picking up the res ervations made at their local tick et office, thereby avoiding the 15 per cent tax they would have to pay if they bought the tickets in this country. Another way to beat the tax is simply to travel by one of the Canadian railroad lines or air lines." Either way, he said, this govern ment collects no tax on the trans portation. Attlee Raps Laborites For Straying From Party LONDON, May 26 i) Prime Minister Attlee laid down the law personally Wednesday to more than 70 Lahorite members of Parliament who have been straying from the labor line. Anxious to restore a united front against the growing chal lenge of Winston Churchill's con servatives, Attlee and party lead er Herbert Morrison faced the rebels at a closed door session in tiie House of Commons. It was considered certain that they rebuked the rebels severely for recent voting against party instructions and insisted on loyal obedience in the future. The Attlee cabinet is plainly worried about the lack of partv discipline in the face of the on coming general elections of next summer.
