For Two Utility Concerns

tomers of the Portland General
Electric Co. and the Pacific Pow
er and Llnht Co. will begin pay
ing higher rales beginning wilh
their next meter readings.
Public Ulililics Commissioner
George H. Flagg Monday gave
the PGE company a $1,-170,000
annual rate increase, or about
two-thirds of what the company
asked. The P. P. &'L increase
totals $320,000.
Residential rates are boosted
G.8 per cent, while increases in
other schedules range up to 11
per- cent.
Portland Referendum
Hits Tax Boost Plan

The Oregon Tax Council had filed
petitions bearing 21,000 signa
tures in a referendum move to
block new city taxes on private
income and business profits.
The names of 1.1.3S2 eligible,
electors are required to order a
referendum on the tax ordin
ances. The taxes, adopted a month ago
by the City Council, would be of.

Camp Fire Girls,
Bluebirds Told To
Enroll For Camp
Camp Fire Girls and Bluebirds
who wish to attend summer ses
sions at Camp Tyee are asked to
register with their guardian or
at the Camp Fire office at Mil
ler's, it was urged today by Coun
cil members. Girls registering
early will have a better opportu
nity of choosing the week they
wish rather than waiting until a
later date.
Typhoid shots are available
each Monday at the County
Health Office, and all girls going
to camp are urged to get the se
ries or booster shots. Miss Lois
Fitzgibbons will head the counsel
lors at Camp Tyee again this
summer. Other counsellors being
selected will be announced soon.
Girls will have overnight hikes
this year as well as the round of
other activities such as singing,
swimming, camp, nature and
handicraft classes, and sports and
games.

elected to head the Oregon
Knights of Columbus at yester
day's closing session of the three
day convention.
Other officers re elected to one
year terms are Edward J. Bell,
Stayton, secretary; Carl Ben
scheidt, Tillamook, treasurer;
Rev. James Maxwell, St. Paul,
chaplain; William Scharn, Pen
dleton, advocate; and Lee Goet,
Portland, warden.
Those elected as delegates to
the national K. C. convention,
which will be held in Portland in
August, were Circuit Judge
Frank J. Lonergan, Portland; Jo
seph Peppe, Vale; V. Dan Hay,
Portland; and E. L. Elvin, Salem.
The delegates passed resolu
tions asking that the church and
civil authorities cooperate to
fight Communism, and opposing
socialized medicine.
GMC Again Cuts Prices
On Aurcs And Trucks

eral Motors Corporation Mondav

tion in the price of all its pas
sonrror cars and trucks, ef
fective Immediately.
The reductions were GM's sec
ond in all lines of passenger
cars in the last three months.
On Feb. 25. the Company re
duced passenger car prices S10
to S 10 and trimmed truck prices
downward hv as much as $150
In some lines.
Monday's announcement came
from C. E. Wilson, General Mo
tors president, who said the price
reduction coincided with a down
ward adjustment on cost of liv
ing allowances to be paid dur
ing the next three months to

Issue Confronts
Council At Salem
SALEM, May 24 f.T) The
Salem City Council will decide
June 13 if it wants an occupations
tax. removal ot rent control, and
higher bus faies.
Measures to accomplish these
things were introduced at last
night's Council meeting.
The occupations tax would be
from $10 to $100 a year on each
business house. It "would raise
$20,000 a year to pay for an off
street parking program.

Council votes to end it, then it
would be up to the governor to
decontrol Salem rents.
Citv transit lines asked for a
straight 10-cent bus fare. The
tare now is U) cents, or threes

Wife Faces Charge In
Shooting Her Husband
EUGKNK, May 21.(.V The
shooting of Irvin Kllis Harris.
32. was blamed by state police
Monday on Harris desire for
another drink. His wife, Dorothy (

The man was shot Sunday In
front of two witnesses in a
trailer court cabin on the Pa
cific Highway north of here.
He was reported in "fair" con
dition in a local hospital.
Mrs. Harris, mother of two
children, is scheduled to be ar
raigned in district court on . a
charge of assault with intent
to kill. State police said that
t he couple had returned home
about Z a.m. Minnay. when Mar
lis decided to go to the cabin
of another woman. lor one more
drink.
His wife followed him and Is
reported to have shot him twice
with a .22 calibre rifle through
the half open door as h stood
in the other cabin.
