A. met Saturday night at the school with the presi dent, Mrs. Pat Lucas, in charge. The school children presented a group of songs and poems. The audience gave the pledge to the flag. Mrs. Warren Lucas in stalled the officers for the com ing year. New officers are: President, Vern Wooten; vice-president, Da vid Sands; secretary, Morris Durch, and treasurer, Stanley Sjogren. Plans were made for the an nual school picnic to be held at Umpqua Park Sunday, May 22. The 4-H girls gave a demon stration of their sewing. At the close of the meetine lovelv re freshments were served by the 4-H girls. MRS. IDA SLACK IS HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Albert Slack was host Sunday, when he entertained at a chick en dinner at his home on North Calapooia St., honoring his moth er, Mrs. Ida Slack, on her eighty ninth birthday. The linen-covered table was centered with a beau tiful bouquet of roses. A beauti fully decorated heart-shaped cake, made by Mrs. Harriet Hansen and Mrs. Leta Brauch was cut by the guest of honor. Covers were placed for: Walter Slack of San Francisco, Califor nia, Mr. and Mrs. Brittain Slack, the guest of honor, Mrs. Ida Slack and the host, Albert Slack. The afternoon was spent in vis iting, and looking at the many lovely cards received by the guest of honor. Carter of Roseburg took their daughter, Mrs. T. C. Fitz gerald (Thelrra Carter), and her small son, Terry, to Portland Fri day, where the latter two left by plane for Fort Benning, Ga., to join Lt. Col. Fitzgerald and make their home. They have been spending several weeks visiting here. WINCHESTER COMMUNITY CLUB LADIES MEET The Winchester Community Club ladles met Thursday for a dessert-luncheon at the home of Mrs. Walter Reber with Mrs. Herb Wonch and Mrs. Marie Kruysman, co-hostesses. Mrs. C o r i n n e McTaggart, Douglas County home extension agent, was a most welcome guest and gave a talk on forming an extension unit in the district. All women interested are asked to attend the next afternoon meeting, which will be held on Thursday, June 9, with Mrs. Dale Soli and Mrs. Art Bartlett as hostesses. ELGAROSE MENDING BASKET HAS MEETING The Elgarose Mending Basket met at the school Friday with Mrs. Agnes South and Mrs. Thel ma Hanson, leaders, in charge, and Charlotte Sand, president, conducting the business session. Appointment was made by County Judge D. N. Busenbark upon peti tion of Florence Moore and Laura Blakeley. Named as ap praisers are W. M. Hoppe Sr., S. E. Peterson and R. T. Blakeley. Gordon G. Carlson has been appointed administrator with w.il annexed of the estate of David E. Monroe, who died March 8, 1945, at Bayfield County, Wis. He left Douglas County property valued at $4,000. Appointment was made upon petition of Frank Monroe, who has been appointed executor of the estate, but can not serve in this county as he is an out-of-state resident. H. C. Berg has been named appraiser of local property. Upon filing of his petition, Claude Trueman, a son, has been appointed administrator of the estate of Melissa M. Melzger, who died Jan. 7, 1949, leaving real property valued at 510,000. Heirs are her husband, Roy Metzger, Camas Valley, and son, Claude Truman, Madras. Named as ap praisers are Phillip Standley, John Thrush and Orin Siandley. Fair Share Of Lumber Orders Asked For U. S. WASHINGTON, May 20. OP) rtep. Mack (K.-wasli.) Thurs day asked a special House Conv mittee on foreign aid to see to it that American producers get a fair share of lumber orders from countries receiving Economic Re covery Administration aid. He described how lumber and plywood shipments have de creased In the last year and said the ECA Issued regulations de signed to prevent discrimination against the American Industry. He cited one instance where foreign governments placed re strictions on their lumber orders that prevented Americans to bid for the business. He illustrated by saying that the timber controller In London issued a set of "very difficult" specifications in calling for lum ber bids on May 3 wilh the re quirement that American sup pliers have their bids in by May 9. State Police Recapture Escaped Prison Trusty SALEM, Ore., May 20. UP) Stale Police Thursday recaptured Robert Earl Lee, 34, State Prison trusty who walked away from the Prison farm six days ago. They found him hiding out at Scotts Mills, located in the hills 20 miles east of here. Lee, who took a portable radio and an alarm clock with him when he left the Prison, was em ployed In the Prison chicken- house. Twenty-two members and guests were present. Special guests tor the evening were Kicn ard Mcintosh, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Mcintosh; Jim Whip ple, and Richard Duncan. After a session of eating, singing and joking, the club got down to bust ness. The nomination committee turned in its reports on officers for the coming year, which was accepted by the club, and after formal election next month will be installed at a Lions' banquet, to De neia at a later date. Officers nominated for the 19491950 year follows: President, Phil Griswold: first vice presi dent, Hank Hathaway; second vice president, William Griswold; third vice president, Hugh Whip- pie; secretary. This was made by Chairman Elmer Maples. To Return Home E. W. Holmes of the Douglas Timber Corp., who has been in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland for the past month, ex pects to be released and return to his home the coming weekend. Burned at Mill Alburt Gtisham, night watch man for the Doimlas Timber Corp., was seriously burned Mon day morning about 2:30 when the boiler, in which he was attempt ing to start a fire, back-fired, burning him on the face and hands. These were second and third degree burns and he will be off work for some time. Dr. L. H. Imboden is caring for him. COUGAR SLAIN SILVERTON. May 20. UP) A seven-foot cougar was shot Wednesday night hy Walter Lar son, Silverton Hills farmer. Dogs treed the giant cat after a motorist spotted it.
