Countries Improved, Truman Reports
WASHINGTON, May 17. -OP)
President Truman Monday
. forecast a "substantial improve
ment" in the foreign trade posi
tion of Europe's Marshall plan
countries.
The production and trade goals
set for the year ending this June
30 are virtually sure of being
realized, he said, with the result
that the Western European na
tions will be able to pay for about
half of their imports out of their
own earnings.
But he coupled with his report
of "Satisfactory progress" a
warning that these nations must
achieve "extensive" economic ex
pansion and reform If thpy are
to become Independent of Ameri
can aid by the end of 1952 when
Marshall plan dollars are due to
give out.
His sum-up was in a report to
Congress on the work of the Eco
nomic Cooperation Admlnlstra
tion during the last quarter of
1948. Mr. Truman also said that
Communist advances' in China
have had a "disastrous" effect on
the economic and political posi
tion of Nationalist China and
had, thereby limited ECA's ac
tivities. In Europe, Mr. Truman said,
the countries receiving American
aid under the Marshall plan had
substantially completed the "first
phase" of their Joint effort to
get back on their own economic
feet. They reached, in general,
the production, levels they had
before the war. But, the presi
dent emphasized, that is not
enough; they must far exceed
their prewar production in order
to pay their own way.

Out 'Cash On Delivery'
GLENDALE, Calif.. May 18.-
UP) For just blurting out "cash
on delivery," a Glendale house
wife won $26,000 worth of radio
prizes.
Mrs. Marie Spangler, 25, won
tne jacKpot last nignt on a na
tional radio show (Hit the Jack
pot) by correctly identifying
secret saying.
"I must have changed my mind
a dozen times about what the
winning secret saying would be."
she said. "But when the master
of ceremonies called from New
York, I Just blurted it out."
Prizes include an automobile,
a flying vacation to Lima, Peru,
a $2,000 wardrobe, $1,000 worth
of hats and even a gold-plated
lawnmower.
That last Item will come In
handy. Mrs. Spangler, her hus
band and baby boy live in an
apartment.

Aiken is still seeking a replace
ment for Frank Zazula as back
field coach. Zazula joined Miller
at North Dakota at the end of
the winter term at Oregon.

Vern Hoi gate Recovering
From Injuries In Blast;
Other Events Reported

Vern Holgate was seriouslv In
jured by a blast last Friday after
noon, wnne in me woods east oi
town. He had gone with the driv
er of one of his logging trucks
and was standing by while it was
loaded. The blast was set off 600
feet away.
. rock or snag struck Holgate
in the head, causing a seven-inch
cut in the scalp and injuring two
vertebrae in the neck. Holgate
was removed to Sacred Heart
Hospital In Eugene, where he is
under the care of a doctor and
three special nurses.
Reports from Eugene Indicate
that Holgate is holding hie own
and if everything goes all right
the neck will be placed in a cast
at tne end oi tne wee.
