The House has been consider ing routine and minor legislation for the last several days. This constitutes a welcome "breather" after the strain of more than a week of debate on the Labor Management bill. One little incident which oc curred while a bill was being read for amendment was as revealing as it was interesting. The bill had tor do with granting authority to the Commodity Credit Corpora tion to provide warehouse space for grain. Congressman ..John Phillips of' California offered a simple amendment the force of which was to allow the CCC to loan farmers money so they could build small storage bins for themselves the loan to be re paid from current crop proceeds. .The result would be a saving of many millions of dollars which would otherwise be spent by the government to buy or build ware houses. The further result would be to allow a farmer to have con trol of his own business rather than to have it controlled by the government. . All Republicans voted "or the amendment and so did a few Democrat members. Ad-, ministration members voted "no" National Forest Timber for Sale Oral auction bids will be re ceived by the Forest Supervisor, Post Office Building, Roseburg, Oregon, beginning at 2:00 p.m., Pacific Standard time, May 27, 1949. for all the live timber marked or designated for cutting and . all merchantable dead tim ber ilocated on an area embrac ing -about 75 acres within sec tions 28 and 32, T 28 S, R 3 W., W.M., Unjpqua National Forest, Oregon, estimated to be 1,713.000 feet B.M.,! more: or less of Douglas-fir, 230,000 feet B.M. more or less ' of sugar pine, and 124,000 feet B.M.; more or less of Cali fornia incense-cedar, and. 146,000 feet B.M. more or less of western hemlock and other species of sawtimber. Patrick J. Sloan, was acqut ted of a charge of sodomy last night. A Circuit Court jury delib erated less than two hours. The complaining witness, Rob ert Dale Johnson, 16, testified the alleged act occurred in the priest's home at Bethamy, Mo. on April 10, 1948. Billy Wheatley, 16, testified he witnessed the act. The priest denied the charge, but admitted the Johnson boy vis ited the rectory 13 times and stayed overnight twice. A previous trial of the priest on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor ended in a hung jury. but the amendment was passed on a teller vote. Now here is the revealing part of this story. The opposition to the amendment (administration forces) DID NOT ask for a recorded roll call vote on that amendment. It seemed pretty obvious to me that they were willing and anxious to vote further control over the farmers if they could do it anonymously, but when it came to having their names printed in cold type in the Congressional Record as opposing the idea of a farmer building his own storage bin that they did not want to do! .... In these letters I have endeavor ed to avoid referring to the intent of the Truman administration as Socialistic. The pattern of legis lation soonsored by prominent administration members and the pattern of statements by the President himself are becoming so clear in that direction, that I intend to devote a future letter to that subject.
