() A budget Involving a total es timated expense of .$4.T3,1S1 for the nmt Hacal year lor the re cently expanded school district No, S, Baiter; wu adopted by the School Board and approved by mmliivi of the Budget Ad visory Board. Adoption followed several weeki of Intensive work In studying the problems of the new district, which embraces 14 former districts. District No. 5 Ibis year has had a total assessed valuation of $7,083,000. The expanded dis trict .will have an assessed valu ation of $11,963,000. and will he the sixth largest school district in Oregon. Central railroad of New Jersey ferry boats between here and New York have little boxes con taining literature screwed to the walls. On each box is a sign: "please take one." Railroad police today are look ing for 12 missing boxes, taken by literal-minded passengers. Program For Annual Timber Days Celebration July 1-4 At Sutherlin Taking Shape The program for Sutherlin'a second annual Timber Days' cele bration, July 1-4 la shaping up rapidly. R. J. Baldwin, general chair man, reports that all committees are hard at work and have all details well In hand. The full program will be ready for public release in the near future, he reports. Dick Gilman, chairman of the logging contests, has informed the Genera! Committee, Baldwin states, that the events will in clude bucking, chopping, log rol ling, splicing, trucking, tug-of-war, and high-climbing. The con test will be part of the enter tainment July 4. The Pet parade will be a fea ture Saturday, July 2. Partici pants will include Boy and Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Sutherlin High School Band, and free-for-all pet and decorated bicycle en tries. The parade will start near the railroad tracks and disband at the City Park, where Chair-, man William Jones is arrang ing a program of outdoor sports for the Junior division. Queen Contest Slated ' The queen contest Is to be terminated in Roseburg June 10 at a public program at the Sen ior High School Auditorium. Con testants are being entered from high schools In all parts of the county. Selection will be made in connection with an amateur talent show and Sally Hilt enter tainers at Roseburg. The queen will be crowned Fri day night, July 1, at a corona' tion hall In Sutherlin, opening the four-day celebration. Other events during the celebration will Include outdoor sports and eon tests, ball games, boxing, dancing. memorial services and dedication of the new American Legion Hall, pageant, celebration parade, Mon day, drill team exhibition by the Eagles lodge team, drill by Sher iff's Posse, logging contests and fireworks. Hiron Amusement Co. of Salem has been contracted to furnish rides and concessions which will be operated by the American Legion with Ardell Loerts as chairman. The task of arranging the mam moth celebration is being handled by 31 committees, each given a detinue assignment. Headquar ters have been established in Hebard's Cafe. The main office is located In quarters formerly used by Franelane's Gift Shop. LOCAL NEWS Improvlna Mrs. E. S. Hall is reported improving at her home on Military Street, following an illness of the last week. Meeting Postponed The Ore gon Slate College Mothers Club meeting, planned for Monday, has been indefinitely postponed. Improving Mrs. Rolland Quam of Roseburg is reported to be doing nicely at Mercy Hospital, where she underwent a major operation a week .ago. Visit Here Mr. and Mrs. Ray mond Scofield have returned to their home in Eugene, following a visit in Roseburg with the former's parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. B. Scofield. Leaves for Home Mrs. W. E. Martig (Bertha Cooney) left Fri day for her home in Rosemead, Calif., following a visit with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs Charles Doerner, and family. Abilene, Tex., Records No Fatalities 702 Days ABILENE, Tex., May 14.- Meet the new champion. . . Abilene last midnight passed its 702nd day without a city traf fic death. No other city can make that claim. This west Texas city of some 40,000 population tied the record of Schenectady, N. Y. 701 days without a traffic fatality at mid night Thursday. Settergren has begun the groundwork preliminary to construction of a 13-room addition to Riverside School. Part of the building will be one story, lining up with the present structure, and the remainder will be two stories, with the upper story having a ground level entrance onto the present playgrounds. (Picture by Paul Jenkins I California Bill Bans Teaching of Any Government System But the American SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 14 (JP) Legislation to make it a crime to teach California school children to prefer any but the American system of government was approved Friday by the Senate Education Committee. Senator Jack B. Tenney of Los Angeles declared his bill was de signed "to stop the teaching of totalitarian ideas." Tenney is chairman of the State Senate Un American Activities Committee. Opponents said the bill would be used to smear innocent teach ers for just mentioning the word Communism in their classrooms. Or, they said, it might get an instructor in trouble for savine something good about one phase in any loreign iorm oi government. The Committee voted 6 to 2 to recommend passage. The measure would make it a misdemeanor to advocate "Communism, Nazism.
