Trucks Of Detroit Snaps
Washington Win Streak;
Cincy Blanks N. Y. Giants
By JACK HAND
f Associated Press Sports Writer)
Mel Parnell's pitching is the
only bright spot in the dreary
spring showing of the mighty
Boston Red Sox.
It took Parnell's brilliant 11
innlng victory over Chicago yes
terday to pull the Sox up even
with last year's sorry opening
month.
Down south the wise guys
said "Boston can't possibly get
off as slowly as last year." They
were wrong. As of today Boston
has a 911 record. Last May 13
their won and lost totals were
exactly the same.
Parnell struck out 11 White
Sox hitters yesterday but need
ed, an 11th irmlng homer
Vern Stephens to get off the
hook, 2-1. It was his Jourth vic
tory, Washington's nine-game win
ning slreak finally was snapped
by Detroit's Virgil Trucks, 2-1.
Don Kolloway, who Joined the
Timers Sunday in a trade with
Chicago, blasted two doubles and
a triple off Walt Masterson.
Trucks' five-hitter was his fifth
triumph of the season.
The St. Louis Browns blasted
three home runs to rout Lou
Hrissie and the PhilaJelpliia A's,
9-3, for their third straight fol
lowing a 10-game losing string.
Dick Kokos. Bob Dillinuer and
h.a iagnnl hit Brissies home
run bail out of the park.
The New York Yankees and
Cleveland were not .scheduled.
Cincy Blanks Giants
Cincinnati, which stopped the
New York Giants' winning surge
alter seven in a row, made it
two straight on a 3-0 shutout by
Ken Raffensberger.
Raffensberger's second shut
out was a brilliant job. He hold
the power-hitting Giants to four
singles, dropping them into a
first place tie with the Boston
Braves whose scheduled game
with St. Louis was postponed be
cause of wet grounds.
Clint Hartung, who had won
his first four, was clipped for
eight hits and all the Cincinnati
runs In his eighth-inning stretch.
Ralph Branca became the Na
tional League's first five-game
winner with an 11-0 verdict over
Pittsburgh.
Hank Borowy, traded to the
Phillies by Chicago last winter,
whipped his old Cub mates the
first time he faced them, 4-3.
Hob Rush gave up only six hits
but was hurt- by Hnl Jeffcoat's
costly error on Del Ennls' fly
that set up the winning score in
the sixth.

Defeat Beavers
In 12 Innings
By JIM BACON
(Associated Press Sports Writer)
Easter's east and west is best
but Hollywood is still two-and-a-half
games ahead of San Diego
in the Pacific Coast League race.
Big Luke Easter belted his
10th and 11th home runs of the
year and slamsie Maxie West
socked his 16th as the Padres
slugged Los Angeles 9 to 1 Thurs
day night. Red Adams, who once
pitched for the Angels, scattered
eight hits to his old mates in
notching the win.
The Stars, meanwhile, for the
second straight night needed 12
innings to best the lowly Port
land Beavers. Hollywood explod
ed for four runs in the 12th to
win 9-5. With one out, Andy
Skurski, who had saved the game
in the tenth with a spectacular
catch, blasted a single to score
two runs and break the 5-5 dead
lock. The Stars added two more
and pitcher Art Schallock, who
allowed but one hit in his six
inning relief stint, mowed the
Beavers down in the last half
of the 12th.
At Seattle, the Ralniers re
gretted that they had ever let
loose of Loyd Christopher. The
big Oakland outfielder blasted
(wo home runs. The second one
with the bases full sent the Oaks
ahead to win 7 to 6. Seattle had
taken an early 5 to 2 lead be
fore Christopher went to work.
The San Francisco Seals pulled
an oddity in beating Sacramento
10 to 1. The winners went
through their entire batting or
der in the third to score four
runs without a single hit. Seven
walks did the job. Con Dempsey
pitched a tight ball game to win.
Spacing seven hits with care.
