Beetles Freed To Feast On Costly Weed In Oregon PENDLETON, May 12 OB Ten thousand beetles were nip ping away at hyperlcum perfora um L. today. Their little red anterior wings fanned them happily through the Blue Mountain foothills. To them it Is the land of Uilk and honey. That is. Forest Service employes hope they find it so. For the beetles are Australian bred affairs chrysollna hyperici and hypericum perforatum is the Sunday dinner name for those weeds called St. Johnswort. The beetles like St. Johnswort, a weed that has resisted all chemical at tacks. When cattle eat St. Johnswort they become ill and they find it snread over the grazing lands of Umatilla, Wallowa, Benton and Douglas Counties of Oregon as well as in Idaho and such sections of Washington as the Chatteroy vicinity north of Spokane. As a feed for cattle is results In shattered nervous systems. The Australian beetles, though thrive on it. They like it so well there is considerable hope they can bring the noxious weed under control. The beetles arrived here in two two-auart ice cream cartons in an air shipment from the Bureau of Entomology laboratory at Berke ley, Calif. They were released In some once-fine grazing land in the Blue Mountain foothills land where there is so much St. Johns wort that cattle turned loose there would become loco from the diet. St. Johnswort is sometimes called Klamath weed, but County Agent Victor W. Johnson said that "isn't fair." Jackson n Via Having personal news contacts throughout the world is one of the outstanding coverage patterns on Bill Henry's five-minute week day broadcast (6:55 to 7 p. m.). For example, the International Olympics Committee recently voted to hold the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Aus traia, a fact which set off a hue and cry about changed climatic conditions and their affects on the athletes. Bill picked up his phone at the MBS office in Wash- ington and put in a call tor Rome. There he srjoke to his friend Frank Beaurepaire, a for- v mer lord mayor of Melbourne, who gave him the headline story that the Summer Olympics in Australia would be held in September or October "'to offset changes in climatic conditions for the athletes."
