14 The Newt-Review, Roseburg, Ore. Thur., May 12, 1949 ' Spain Must Restore Basic Civil Rights To Win U. N. Entry Acheson WASHINGTON, May 12. (JP tions Committee. Secretary of State Acheson said Wednesday Franco Spain must go a long way toward restoring basic civil rights before it can hope to be admitted into the fam ily of free European nations. Acheson told a news conference the United States considers the issue of relations with Spain an international family matter on which European agreement is needed. For this reason he said the United Slates will continue to abstain from voting In the United Nations General Assem bly on a resolution to return am bassadors to Madrid. Acheson referred to the Franco regime as patterned after Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. He said it is still Fascist. The secretary's review of pol icy toward bpaln followed up criticism of the State Depart ment's stand by Chairman Con naliy (U.-lex.) and ranKing mem ben of the Senate Foreign Rela- His statement in some respects paralleled arguments presented to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by Norman Thomas, veteran Socialist leader, in oppo-, sition to admission of Spain to the Atlantic Pact. Thomas said taking Spain into the Pact would be "cynically to flout any con tention of concern for democracy or regard for the moral character of government." Franco Spain, Acheson said, has denied such fundamental hu man rights as habeas corpus, trial by jury, religious liberty and free association. He said these are the same rights which make the difference between free Europe and the Iron Curtain countries. British Protestants Dtery Princess' Visit To Pope LONDON, May 12. UP A top-, protested to the king in advance ranking British Protestant group protested to King George Wednes day over Princess Margaret's audience with Pope Pius XII. The Executive Committee ol the National Union of Protestants sent this telegram to the king: "Many thousands of Your Majesty's most loyal Protestant subjects are greatly incensed at the visit of Princess Margaret to the Pope and find great offense in the pictures published in the daily papers." British newspapers published pictures showing the 18-year-old princess, garbed and veiled in black walking through a Vatican corridor, escorted by the Pope's Swiss Guards, after her visit with him Tuesday. Fairs, Festivals, Rodeos Will Be Held In Many Oregon Cities During This Year SALEM, Ore., May 12. (Spe cial) An outstanding western event, with all the flavor of the Old West, Days of '62 celebration, was officialiy announced this week by Canyon City sponsors for June 4 at Canyon City In Eastern Oregon. This is one of spveral revisions reported for the 1949 list of com ing calendar of events recently is sued by the travel information de partment of the Oregon State Highway Commission. The Days of '62 has been a Can yon City annual feature for more than 25 years and is well known for its fast moving, interesting program recalling stirring tfmes of yester-years. The Elgin Slampede Is sched uled for July 14 to 16 at Elgin in Eastern Oregon, presenting a colorful western program. Spon sors of the Mt. Angel Flax Festi val have announced that the fes tival is to he held July 29 to 31 instead of August 5 to 7. Derby at Reedsport The Reedsport Chamber of Commerce reports a striped bass derby .from May 15 to July 15. Oregon Coast Association head quarters at Tillamook announces the Rhododendron festival at Florence is now scheduled for May 29 to coincide with the time the'tlowers are expected to be at their peak. Fourth of July celebrations have been recently announced by Bandon on the Coast and by Con-; don in Norlh Central Oregon. ; The Athena Chamber of Com- mei ct! reports that the Wlldhorse I Riding Club Is sponsoring a rodeo during the latter part of May. No definite dntes as yet have been set. I The Reedsport Chamber of. Commerce also reports It is join ing in the sponsorship of a West ern Douglas County fair, which will probably be held on Septem ber 3 or the week previous. Exact dales are still to be set. Recently announced at Warren- ton is the Scotch Broom lestivai for .'une 12, the first time it has been .held in a decade. The lesti vai is scheduled for the time the Scotch broom is expected to be at its flowering peak on the Clatsop plains. Mayor John Mills at Sandy has announced a strawberry festival at his city July 18 and 19. A giant shortcake Is to be cut on the eve ning of July 18. A pony express race is Included In the two-day program. A Central Oregon aviation day Is scheduled at Redmond on June 12, with an interesting program now under preparation for the all day air show. The Sherman Coun ty Fair reports revised dates of September 15 through 18 for fail events at Moro. A rodeo Is in cluded. The Order of Mavericks of the John Day chamber of commerce Is holding a sepcial celebration on the week-end of May 14 honoring the Oregon Sportsmen Pilots. The Mavericks were organized to pub licize picturesque customs and practices of the old-time west. A Doukhobor Faction Man Accused Of Arson NELSON, B. C, jam factory, has been turned over to provincial police. The man, Peter Swetllshkoff, surrendered following a mass meeting of 100 members of the Sons of Freedom sect.
