Chinese Sell Wares on Shanghai
Streets As Currency Value Drops
SHANGHAI, May 9. UP The
sidewalks ol New York are cele
brated in song, but you oupht to
see the sidewalk.! of Shanghai.
Always teeming with peddlers,
they have become the largest
merchandise "counter" in the
world as normally salaried work
ers try to sell the goods they
have received as wages.
Due to collapse of the Nation
alist currency, few bouses had
cash, so they paid off in what
ever they could get.
Imagine a California cannery
worker being' paid in canned
peaches or a Massachusetts tex
tile mill hand being paid in cloth.
Then imagine those workers
spreading these wares on Market
Street in San Francisco or all
over Boston Common to try to
sell enough to feed their families.
That's the sort of thing that's
going on in Shanghai on a tre
mendous scale.
Typical Case
A typical case Is a rather
weazened, embarrassed old wom
an who has taken her stand In
lront of a smart linen shop on
once-swank Yates Hoad. She is
trying to sell four cheap bed
spreads her month's wages. She
attracts a little more attention
than the linen shop windows,
but neither venture Is doing
much business.
On crowded, jostling Tibet
Road, a plnch-faced youngsler,
obviously new to this hurly-burly
merchandising, shouts the
merits of his stock of six pairs
I of tennis shoes. That's what he
eot for two weeks work.
Along Tibet Road and at the
Junction with Avenue King to
ward the Seventh, there are thou
sands of such new merchants.
Their wares include such diverse
items as flutes, scarves, boots,
handbags, mousetraps, pots, shoe
laces, spoons and toothpaste
whatever their employers hap
pened to have or were able to
get to pay them oil.
Competition Rough
In this rough competition, the
most bashful salesman soon loses
his reticence. If he doesn't, he
may lose the sale that means
food for himself and family.
On busy Bubbling Well Road,
this correspondent saw a big
eyed frightened boy of about 12.
Ills m o n t h's wages a dozen
handkerchiefs were spread out
in the shade of a parked truck.
When asked the price of his
goods, he whispered tremulously
and gulped as a lound-mouthed
professional hawker tried to
muscle in.
Making the sale, the boy grin
ned his gratitude and bolted
away. He was luckier than most.
Business is not good, generally
speaking. Most people don't have
money to spend on new handker
chiefs or shoes or bedspreads.
They are fortunate if they have
enough to buy rice.

Roughness Of Concrete
Blamed For Air Crash
SEATTLE, May 9. (JP Did
roughness of concrete on runways
at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport
contribute to the crash of an Alas
ka Airlines plane that brought
death to nine persons in Novem
ber, 1947?
That's the theory of Donald M.
Kizer, chief inspector lor the
Alaska firm.
Kizer testified in Federal Court
Friday that airmen referred to
the Seattle-Tacoma field as the
"roller-bearing special." He ex
plained that "the concrete has
been combed and the roughness
holds water . . . Under some cir
cumstances water is an excellent
lubricant and that was one of the
times."
He further described the con
crete as "faulty" and said it has
small points that break off under
good braking conditions, giving
the "roller-bearing" effect.
Kizer was called as a company
witness In the retrial of a $35,000
damage suit filed against the air
line by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Tracy.
