Clint Agee's deadly aim at the
free-throw line saved the day for
a hard-pressed Indian learn at
Forest Grove Monday night. He
flipped the ball Into the bucket
just 17 seconds this side ot the
final gun, making the final score
44-43.
It was a pitched battle all the
way, with neither team allowing
more than a four-point separa
tion in score. The first quarter
ended 14-14, while Roseburg had
the Forest Grove edged by a 27-25
score at the half. The Grovors
pulled ahead. 31-30, at the three
quarter mark, and after that It
was a bitter struggle to retain
top position In the scoring de
partment. Roseburg dropped two points
behind In the last period, then
Don Hubbard hooped one to even
the count at 41-41. Forest Grove
pulled ahead when high scoring

Harry (The Cat) Brecheen, only
left-hander in hiatory to win
three games in one world series,
posted the best earned run mark
among National League pitchers
in the 1948 season.
The stylish lefthander of the
St. Louis Cardinals allowed 58
earned runs in 233 Innings for
a 2.24 mark, tops among mounds
men who pitched ten or more
complete games, according to fi
nal omciet averages reieasea to
day. Brecheen, who won three
games for the Cards against the
Boston Red Sox in the 1946 World
Series, also led the league In
shutouts with seven and in strike
outs with 149. The 34-year-old star
won 20 games and lost 7, the
first time he has hit the 20
mark in his big league career.
Sewell, Sain Rate Next
Hip Sewell, 40-year-old right
hander of the Pittsburgh Pirates,
won 13 games and lost three to
finish with the best won-Iost
percentage, .813. Sewell also
sported the longest winning
streak, eight games. He started
his skein on July 22 and kept
it Intact Ihe rest of the race.
Righthander Johnny Sain of Ihe
champion Boston Braves was the
circuit's workhorse. Sain won the
most games, 24; started the most,
29; completed the most, 28; hurl
ed the most innings, 315; faced
the most batters, 1,31.5, and yield
ed the most hits, 297.
Cincinnati's relief specialist,
Harry Gumbert, participated in
the most games. 61, and finished
the most games, 46. Larry Jan
sen of New York allowed the
most runs, 125, and Murry Dick
son of St. Louis the most earned
runs, 116. Dickson also served
up the most homers. 39, a major
league record. Southpaw Johnny
Vander Meer of Cincinnati was
the wildest pllcher, allowing the
most bases on balls, 124.
Rex Barney of Brooklyn pit
ched the only no-hit no-run game,
stopping the New York Giants,
2-0 on Sept. 9. Barney, along with
Kemt Peterson of Cincinnati and
Sheldon Jones of New York,, hit
the most batters, six. Jones com
mitted the most wild pitches,
