Bad Check Passer
Granted Parole
From 2-Year Term
D. R. McMullen, charged with
obtaining money by false pre
tense, was sentenced to two years
in the state penitentiary and pa
roled, and two other persons are
to be sentenced by Circuit Judge
Wimberly, probably Monday, fol
lowing pleas of guilty, all to
charges involving ficticious
checks.
William F. Berryhill, alias Vol
Cranney, alleged to have passed
a forged $98 check on the Rose
burg Lumber Company, Dillard
Branch, pleaded guilty to the
charge, and Judge Wimberly
postponed sentence until the first
of the week.
Laurence G. Goodman went be
fore the Judge on two separate
charges, both "drawing bank
checks with insufficient funds in
the bank to pay the same In full."
He pleaded guilty to the charges,
and will also be sentenced the
first of the week.
Goodman is charged in the dis
trict attorney's information with
giving a $1,000 check to Bertha I.
Wales April 1, 1948, and with pre
senting another check for $495 to
Shull and Broadwell, Sutherlin
auto dealers March 23. Both
checks were written upon the
main branch of the First National
Bank of Portland.
Berryhill recently was returned
from Oklahoma by Sheriff O. T.
Carter and Deputy Red Eck-hardt.

Russians Indicate
Plan to Quir Germany
BERLIN, Oct. 30 UP) The
Russians have started a new
wave of factory removals in
Eastern Germany which indi
cates they may be preparing
withdrawal of their occupation
forces, American intelligence
sources said today.
These sources said the Russians
were not only dismantling fac
tories owned by Germans but also
plants to which the boviets them,
selves held title.
This indicated, they said, that
the Kusslans might be preparing
to pull stakes from Germany.
This would fit the Soviet declara
tion announced at the Warsaw
conference of Eastern European
foreign ministers several months
ago that all four occupying forces
snoum evacuate.

Downes was privileged to have
a grana jury investigation and
a trial by jury and to have an
attorney appointed to represent
him, but he reportedly chose to
plead guilty and be sentenced by
the Judge. . ,
The charge as stated carries a
minimum penalty of 10 years and
a maximum penalty of life im
prisonment, and specifies that the
minimum penalty is to be given
only when the judge considers
leniency to be justified. However,
it was pointed out that he may
be subject to parole, but paroles
are not usually granted on of
fenses of this nature until at least
a third of the sentence has been
served, according to County Clerk
Koy Agee.

New hours for Mass at St.

announced today by Father Ed
mund Hyland, pastor. Starting
tomorrow morning, the hours
will be 7:30, 9, and 10:30 o'clock.
Monday, Nov. 1, which is the
Feast of All Saints, will be a holy
day of obligation. Masses Monday
morning will be at 6:30, 8, and
9 o'clock.
Tuesday, Nov. 2, Is the Feaat
of All Souls. Mass will be offered
continuously from 6:30 a. m. until
9:30 a. m. First mass will start
at 6:30 and the last at 9 o'clock.
Truman Asks Observance

President Truman yesterday ask
ed Americans to renew "their de
votion to the cause of enduring
peace" on November 11, the 30tn
anniversary of the Armistice end

dent asked that the day be obser
