Ghost of Kaiser
Lingers in Berlin
BERLIN-UP) The ghost of
Kaiser Bill tilt hovers over Ber
lin. There it Kronprinzenallee, a
wide boulevard named lor for
mer crown prince W'lhelm. And
Hohenzollernde, another broad
strei't commemorating the house
that ruled Germany from Bis
marck to the Versailles treaty.
There is a Prtnzregenten street
which needs little in the way of
translation, a "Kaiser allee" and
a "Kaiser plate." And a "Kaiser
Friedrich" street.
These names lived through a
dawdling Weimar Republic that
lost the confidence of all Germans
and was booted out. They lived
through even. Adolf Hitler.
"These names of the past make
one think of the good old days,"
, says an oldtime Berliner. "Re
gardless of one's political convic
tions, German's best days were
under the Kaisers. Heaven help
the government that tries to
change those names."
It would seem logical that
changes would be made in the
Soviet sector of Berlin where
the Communists rule and mon
archial ideas in any sense are
supposed to be heresy. But even
there the Kaiser platzes go on'
being Kaiser platzes.

what he was saying since his
English was very labored. ,

er said tartly, "that the Dutch i
language developed from the
"Dietsch" of the middle ages and
the "Low German" of the 16th
and 17 Centuries and is approxi
mately Just as much and just as
little German as our Swiss Ger
man dialect. For three million
Swiss, high German is the school
and written language, the most
widely used of the four official
languages of our country."

been in Roseburg this week at
tending meetings of local units.
The wire unit of the Brother
hood meets the third Monday
and the utility unit the third
Tuesday. Routine matters were
transacted at the meetings, he
said. There are 13 local units
under Crarary's supervision.
