Jews, Egyptians
Ignore U. N. Order
To Cease Firing
TEL AVIV, Israel, Oct. 20
IJpl The Negev battle front
was officially reported to have
flamed Into new violence tonight,
more than 24 hours after the
United Nations Security Council
ordered that tiring cease.
A spokesman for the Israeli
Army confirmed that fresh fight
ing had broken out. Air and
ground action between Israeli
and Egyptian forces was re
newed as the Israeli State Coun
' cil met for four hours without
reaching a decision on whether
to pass the cease fire order on to
Jewish troops.
The Israeli government re
ceived the order today. It ap
peared the Jewish Army already
had accomplished Its major ob
jective. (Egypt also1' received official
notification of the cease lire or
der. Premier Mahmoud Pasha
told newsmen In Cairo "Jewish
aggression" continued this morn
ing. He said the U.N. order did
not fix any deadline and he un
derstood this would be set by the
acting mediator, Dr. Ralph
Bunche.)
The Israeli air force last night
again bombed Gaza in an attack
described as "heavy and success
ful." Jewish planes also struck
Beersheba, El Arlsh, Majdal and
Biet Jebrin.
An informant said Jewish In
fantry Is "consolidating its posi
tions'' atop captured heights con
trolling two key roads of south
ern Palestine.
One road leads to the Negev
and Its 25 Jewish settlements.
The clearing of this road was
declared objective of the Jewish
attack which began last Friday.
The second road was the Egyp
tians' own supply route to their
front south of Jerusalem, the
Beersheba road, which the Jews
appeared to have breached
widely.
Unofficial observer here be
lieve the Jew have obtained
both the military and bargaining
positions they had wanted on th
Negev issue.
The move was accomplished so
quickly that the United Nations
truce commission is now faced
wilh an accomplished fact and
the Jews are In a position to bar
gain tor assurances of a guaran
teed open supply route, or else
hold their newly won uuDliol
points.
