For Texas Vote Tuesday

Maine Voting Today
While the presidential cam
paign gathered steam, Maine's
voters turned out today for the
year's first general election.
Politicians will be totaling up
the expected Republican majority
in that northeastern state today
for any Indication It may give
November's national outcome.
Like the other states, Maine
votes in November on the presi
dency. But unless the signs fall
its citizens today will send Rep
Margaret Chase Smith, Republi
can to the Senate as the first
woman to be elected to a full
six-year term without having ser
ved previously as an appointee.

the political winds are blowing
across the nation.

School Opens at Drain

Military Rites for War
Victim Set For Friday
The remains of Private James
Ward Hess. 20, killed during the
invasion of Leyte Island in the
Philliplnes Oct. 21, 1944. will ar
rive in Roseburg Thursday night,
Sept. 16, and will be met at the
depot by an honor guard and
escort of the American Legion
and will be escorted to the Long
& Orr Mortuary.
Funeral services will be held
Friday, Sept. 17 at 2 p. m. in
the chapel of the Long & Orr
Mortuary'. Dr. C. A. Edwards and
Dr. Morris Roach will officiate.
Military services will follow in
the Masonic Cemetery under
auspices of L'mpqua Post 16,
American Legion.
Hess was born In Hulett, Wyo.,
I Sept. 23. 1923. He attended the
Roseburg schools, and was a stu
dent at Northwestern Christian
College at the time of his enlist-
' ment in the Army, where he
served as a private In the 96th
' Division.
He is survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hess, who
l are now making their home In
Medford: one sisjer, Mrs. Betty
Smith, Med ford: one brother
Steve Hess. Medford, and his
grandmother, Mrs. Betty Porter,
Medford.
