Republicans May
Urge Changes In
Taft-Hartley Act
WASHINGTON, Aug. 20
New Democratic demand! lor
repeal of the Taft-Hartley act '
muugm speculation today that
Republican! mav propose some
changes in the labor law.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, the
GOP presidential nominee, has
not ruled out such a course.
But he and Republican cam
paign planners evidently must
decide first whether anv such
proposals can be made appealing
to organized labor without alien
atini other citizens who want
the act kept pretty much as it is.
Dewey's Taft-Hartley com
ments have been few recently.
But he said in Salt Lake City in
May that he never had seen a
"perfect law.
"I hope that my patty will be
more ready to make corrections
than the Democratic party has
been." he added.
Later the Republican platform
pledged "continuing study to im
prove labor-management legisla

changing conditions.
Thus Dewey goes into the active
phase of the campaign next
month with the way open for
him to propose possible changes
in the law without being tied
down In advance to any specific
revisions.
There seems little doubt but
that he will defend the general

Did Paul Bunyan
Wear Whiskers?
Now Hot Question
TAC?OMA, Aug. 20 P Did
or did not Paul Bunyan wear
whiskers? .
This la a question now perplex
ing members of the 40 and 8.
the fun making organization of
the American Legion.
This outfit is making prepara
tions to entertain the State De
partment Legion Convention
here next week, and they plan
a giant Paul Bunyan and his
blue ox "Babe" In the Thursday
parade.
When it came to assembling
the giant the question of whisk
ers arose- and every available
source of Information was sought
to find out did he or did he not
have them. Libraries were
searched, lumbermen were quer
ied and a telegram was sent Be
midji, Minn., where a huge sta
tue of the fabled lumberman
stands, but no one seemed to
know for a fact.
Of course, it is known that
Paul Bunyan shaved at times
with one of his huge axes, but
did he wear a beard or how
about a moustache?
40 and 8 members hope to
show the world whiskers or no
whiskers when the giant appears
on the streets that is, if they
themselves find out In time.
