Major Projects to Control
Floods in Columbia Basin
Told by Division Engineer

Hated Helli Canyon Dam today as one of the chief projecti the Corp
Of Engineera la considering to help control Columbia Basin floods.
In a speech prepared for delivery before the Northwest Public
Power Association here, the North Pacific Division Engineer named
four other projects which the Corps of Engineers may recommend
to Congress this fall.
The four all "being favorably
considered" because they would
both help control floods and pro
duce substantial quantities of
power are the Priest Rapids
dam on the main stem of the
Columbia above Pasco, Wash.,
Libby Dam on the Kootenai
River In Western Montana; the
John Day project on the lower
Columbia; the Alhenl Falls Dam
on the Pend Oreille River in

during the next 20 vears or more.

1. A fully developed navigable

2. A general flood control plan
of levees and multiple-purpose
reservoirs adequate to control
any Columbia River flood.
3. A plan for development of
more than 7,000,000 kilowatts of
prime power.
4. Irrigation developments as
recommended by the Bureau of
Reclamation.
5. A Lower Columbia fisheries
plan developed by the U. S. Fish
and Wildlife service to Insure
preservation of salmon runs.

production, and multiple-purpose
benefits."
Looking toward the more dis
tant future. Weaver listed 15
other projects which might event
ually be built: Nez Perce, Asotin,
Clarkstan, on the Snake River;
Crevice and Freedom on the
Salmon River; Klkberry and
Bruce'e Kddy on the Clearwater
River; Mossy Rock and May
field on the Cowlitz River; Yale
on the Lewis River; Rocky Reach
and Wells on the Columbia; Katka
on the Kootenai River; Bound
ary on the Pend Oreille River;
Cabinet Gorge on the Clark
Fork River.

time, but provides that 100 or
more owners of bovine animals
may petition the County Court
to hold a hearing and promulgate
an order requiring every bovine
and bull over six months of age
be tested at least once every 12
