Pioneer Oregon
Leader, Dies at 99
SALEM, Ore., July 23.-UPV-Madison
L. Jones, 99, who came
across the plains from Indiana
to Oregon In 1853 when he was
four years old, died in Portland
vesterday from a bronchial ail
ment. Jones was a farmer north of
Salem until 1920, when he went
to the Arlington district of East
ern Oregon to become a wheat
farmer. He retired when he was
80 years old.
Jones served in the State House
of Representatives In 1882, was
on the State Fair Board from
1915 to 1921, and was president
of the Oregon Hop Growers As
sociation In 1910.
His father died at the age of
97, and his wife died in 1939.
Survivors include two sons,
Ronald, of Brooks, state president
of the Farmers Union and a
former state senator: and Ellis,
who is publicity man for the
State Unemployment Compensa
tion Commission; and three
daughters, Mrs. Anderson M.
Cameron and Mrs. John Withy
combe, both of Portland; and
Mrs. Claire Jones Gray of Los
Angeles.
Red Cross Issues
Call for Nurses
The Douglas County chapter
of the American Red Cross has
received an urgent call from the
San Francisco office to recruit
nurses experienced or Qualified
in infantile paralysis work for
service in Los Angeles, Texas.
North Carolina and other centers,
The nurses recruited for this
service will become employes of
the hospital or Institution to
which they are assigned and will
receive salary and maintenance
and work under condition and
hour policies which have been
established on a national basis
by the American Red Cross and
the National Foundation for In
fantile Paralysis. It is expected
that nurses who volunteer will
agree to work for a minimum of
two months, according to Russell 1
M. Stephens, executive secretary, j
District 11 of the Oregon State I
Nurses Association has been eon-'
tacted by the Douglas County
Chapter and has agreed to co
operate In this endeavor to find
volunteers.
Qualified nurses interested re
asked to contact the Douglas
County Chapter office at the
Armory In Roseburg between the
hours of 9 and 4:30 on week
days and from 9 to 12 on
Saturdays.

Road Bting Improved
An elght-mtle strip of the Suth-erlin-Nonpareil
county road Num
ber 13, is being practically re
built this summer, according to
a report from the Douglas Coun
ty Court.
About a foot of base rock Is
being placed on the old oiled road
and crushed rock will be added
as soon as the road base Is ready.
The road cannot be re-olled
this year, however, as It would

A Federal court Jury Thursday

bany, Wade J. Howells and Rich
aid M. Vail of charges they vio
lated housing laws in building
and selling 55 homes to veterans.
All three men were officers In
World War II, and Vail Is a mem
ber of the American Legion Na
tional Housing Commission.
Albany, a contractor, built the
houses and Howells and Vail sold
them at more than ceiling
prices, the government charged.
The prosecution also alleged that
construction was not according
to the approved plans and speclfi
cations. The trial lasted 22 days
and the case went to the Jury
32 hours before it reached its
verdict.
Juror Mrs. Maurlne Stubble-
field, said at one time the Jurors
stood 10 to 2 for conviction.
Six times they asked the court
for additional information.
