Outside Aid Represented in War
Memorial to be Dedicated at Drain

DRATN, July 22. (Special) Everybody talki about the weather,
but nobody doei anything about it! Eveybody ha been talking about
living war memorials but aomebody hai done lomcthlng about It!
That somewxly la this hamlet ot Drain with population of leu
than 1,000. On Sunday they will dedicate a memorial costing $100,000
In material alone. Hundreds of man hours In labor went Into the
Job and every moment was donated.
Donated, too. was all the
mnnpv. There was no asking Un
cle Sammy to pitch In; no funds
from the Oregon State coffers;
or the county; no bond Issues
were floated. It stands today a
living memorial to the heroes of
World War II, bought and paid
for.
The "North Douglas Living
War Memorial" comprises an ultra-modern
swimming pool and
bath house; two concrete tennis
courts and a baseball diamond
with grandstand and night flood
lighting as used In professional
ball parks.

"We did not think we were do
ing the unusual," said James
Whipple, president of the Mem
orial Association, "nor did we
think we were doing the impos
sible.' We merely set ourselves

ing. The Legion will present
a flag. There will be little speech
making, according to Whipple.
And the evening will sec a double
header on the baseball diamond.

this particular area, my 'Canyon

High-powered, effective rifles will
be required by bl' game hunters
In Oregon as soon as the shortage
of sporting arms is ea3ed, the
Oregon State Game Commission
savs.
The commission, pointing out
that because of the present diffi
culty In buying rifles, no Immedi
ate changes In regulations . are
planned, said It was announcing
its policy now as a guide to those
planning to buy rifles.
This Is the policy, formulated
with the aid of the Sporting Arms
and Ammunition Manufacturers'
Institute of New York:
"Lawful rifle call -r. for the
taking of deer should be those
with a caliber designation of 23
or larger and developing 975-foot
pounds or more energ, at 100
yards. Lawful calibers for the
taking of antelope e'k should
ne those with a caliber designa
tion of 25 or larger and develop
ing 1375-foot pounds or more at
100 yards."

Resolutions adopted by the Inland
Empire Convention of the Inter
national Woodworkers of Ameri
ca (CIO) released by President
Karl Nimz include a proposed six
hour day for all working men.
Nimz said that the union mem
bers adopted the proposal for the
shorter day on the basis that pro
ductivity increases as the number
ot hours worked decrease.
Another resolution approved by
the convention asks $100 a month
federal old age pension for per
sons over 65 with a maximum of
$150 a month for married couples.
The convention urged congress
in another resolution adopted to
bring back price controls and re
turn excess profit taxes combined
with strong control of black mar
ket operations.
The group also reiterated Its
opposition to the Taft-Hartley
Labor law and expressed disap
proval of the Mundt-Nlxon bill
governing control of subversive
persons on the basis It could be
applied to minority groups with
worthy causes.
The union represents approxi
mately 6,000 lumber workers in
the inland empire.
