Russian Machinery Shows Flaws
In Handling Berlin Situation

article In the Dally Worker, New York's Communist newt
paper, has come up with an explanation of the Berlin "crisis"
which Its author carefully keeps in quotation marks throughout.
The crisis, says the article, is the result of the United States' efforts
to implement the Marshall Flan.
This is an Interesting state
ment, particularly since the ar
ticle makes no effort to perpet
uate the fiction that the blockade
of Berlin ta due to railroad re
pairs, broken canal locks, and so
on. Nor does it try to Rive the
impression that the blockade Is
something decided on by the local
Soviet military authorities in Ber
lin.
The Worker, like every other
Communist publication and Indi
vidual, gets its cue on important
policy from the propaganda feed
box in Moscow. So It seems high
ly unlikely that one of its writ
ers would undertake to explain
without authority a situation

Clumsy Maneuver
The article, not surprisingly, Is
a little careless in matters of
tact. For instance, it ImDlles that

Errors aside, however, if this

faculty member told the legisla
ture's un-American Activities
Committee today of attending
Communist party meetings with
several university faculty mem
bers. In response to questions as to
whether more than half dozen
educators and their wives were
party members, they replied "I so
thought," and "I assumed o."

party. Jewell said he belonged In

Jewell testified that he belong
ed to the "Rogers Club" which he
said was the professional unit of
the Communist political associa

its operations and that his rec
ords were later stolen.
He said the professional unit
was "what I guess you would call
tne elite oi tne organization.
He said Its members were re
sented" by workers and other
Communist groups.
Both Jewell and Winther said
they never saw any of the others'
memDersnip caras, but tney botn
held a party identification of
their own. Jewell qualified his
identification by saving reijeated-
ly in response to questions as to

Winther. in his testimony, quali
fied his identifications by saving
he "assumed" that the others
were also members.

which he was a member In 1945:

and wife, Joseph Butterworth, all
of the university faculty, and Mrs.
Burton E. James of the Repertory
Playhouse in the University dis
trict. Faculty members named by Dr.
Winther as having attended meet
ings included:
Garland Ethel, Professor and
Mrs. Eby, Prof, and Mrs. Phil
Hps, Angelo Pellegrini, whom he
described as "a reluctant, unco
operative member," Prof, and
Airs. Jacobs, Prof. Joseph Cohen,
Prof. Butterworth, Miss Maule
Beale.
Dr. Winther also said that Jesse
Epstein, Pacific Coast housing au
thority executive, attended meet
ings and "I assumed he was a
member."
Dr. Winther, replying to a ques
tion on the cost of Communist
party membership, responded "I'd
say 5 per cent of our salaries."

BERLIN, July 19. (.1 Ma
Cen. William (Wild Bill) Dono
van, wartime chief of the Office
of Strategic Services, says the
Russian blockade of Berlin Is an
attempt to smash the European
recovery program and drive the
U. S. out of Europe.
Donovan, who is visiting Ger
many in a private capacity, said
at a news conference:
"It is a matter of the Soviets
doing what they said they are
going to do that is, wreck the
European recovery program: and
what they have not said, but
which they want to do: to drive
us out of Europe."
Donovan came to Berlin from
Frankfurt with Gen. Lucius D.
Clay, American military gover
nor and attended Clay's weekly
staff conference.
The ormer OSS chief said if
Russia wanted war it would be
better to find out here and now
than It would be a hundred
miles or a thousand miles from
here some time later.
"If this, on the other hand. Is
Just a Soviet maneuver we should
show them that we are standing
firm," he said.
He advocated such a stand des
pite military disadvantages, "be
cause our more' right to be here
Is clear and unmistakable."
Donovan said he did not like
the phrase "cold war." because
this one Is "hot as hell."

Sumner County Jail did their best
to get the Jailers wife out of a
Jam but they received little help
from an unobliging -itlzenry.
Jailer Bud Graves gave li.is ac
count of what happened during

night:
Mrs. Graves was between floors
in the Jail's elevator when a pow
er failure halted the elevator.
The cage was almost airtight and
in a short time she had trouble
getting her breath. .
She called to the prisoners and
told them of her plight.
The prisoners lighted comic
books, detective magazines and
other paper and threw the flam
ing missiles into the street in an
attempt to attract aitention. They
yelled, screamed and pleaded for
someone to rescue Mrs. Graves.
Passers-by misunderstood the
prisoners, however, and respond
ed with Jeers and such state
ments as "tell It to the marines."
City firemen, however, arrived
after about a half-hour. While
they sought to unjam the eleva
tor, the power was turned back
on and Mrs. Graves was rescued.
