same coal contract signed re
cently by the rest of the coal in
dustry. The Judge told reporters there
is one condition the L'MW
agrees tu modify its union shop
clause in the new agreement if
the provision eventually is ruled
illegal by the National Labor Re
lations board. -
At his news conference. Golds
borough said the 40.000 miners in
the steel industry -owned "captive"
pits will return to work this
morning. They have been Idle for
week.
The contract previously signed
by the rest of the coal industry
provides SI a day wage increases
and double the amount of money
to be made available for the min
ers' welfare and pension fund.
This royalty lew was raised from
10 cents to 20 cents a ton.
Goldsborough made his an
nouncement only an hour before
Lewis and the L'MW were to
make an answer in his court to a
plea for a court order to end the
strike. The request for the order
was filed by Robert N. Denham,
general counsel for the NLRB.

Closing Democratic Convention Big
Riddle Confronting Party Leaders

PHILADELPHIA, July 11. (NEA) The great riddle as the
Democratic convention opens Is how to close It. Shall President
Truman be brought up here from Washington to thrill the revolting
ranks of his party with one of his now-famous off-the-cuff demon
strations of his dynamic personality, and send the rebels home
reunited to do and die for the ticket of Truman and Blank? Roosevelt
did that In 1936, with a mass rally in the stadium next to Convention
Hall.
Those in charge of this conven
tion principally J. Howard Mc
Grath, the national chairman,
and Sergeant at-Arms Leslie
Biffle apparently haven't made
up their minds on this momen
tous question.
The alternative to having the
president make his acceptance
speech in Philadelphia is to have
him go back to Independence,
Mo., and be formally notified ot
his nomination there. You can
imagine the scene:
The president would casually
announce that he was going
home for a few days' rest. He
would be sitting on the porch in
his shirt sleeves and slippers, and
with his television makeup on.
When all of a sudden, who should
come down the street but a com
mittee of distinguished Dems.
I The band would wheel up and
t render a few bars of Beethoven's
j Fifth you know, dit, dit, dit, daa
i the old wartime V for Victory.
One of the delegation would
then step forward and read a
piece, saying that at a recent
spontaneous gathering of disin
terested and unbiased public citi
zens In the City of Brotherly
Love, it had been unanimously
decided lo run Judge Truman for
the presidency. Surprise, sur
prise, surprise.
Nobody would be prepared for
this event except for 1.000 news
papermen, pnotograpners, tne
recorder and all the Democrats
within a day's driving distance
of Independence.
Judge Truman, blushing mod
estly, would then deliver a few
impromptu remarks carefully
prepared In advance by his ghost
writers to make sure he dedi
cated the spot to the right guy
this time meaning to himself.
The supposed advantages to
this program are that it would
add a homey, Down in-Old Mo.
touch to what is starting out as
a pretty sordid and soggy con
vention. Also, it would give the
delegates time in which to go
home and patch up their wounds
and feud-shattered friendships.
Can H Face Them?
The objection to this program
Is that it would be an open con
fession that the president didn't
dare face an unfriendly recep
tion from all the disappointed
and discredited people who tried
to stop him.

so loud they'll either have to take
their walk or keep their peace
forever more. The only man who

is the party's candidate for the
presidency. What this convention
need is a big lift. When this was
suggested to Chairman McGrath
he asked, "What do you mean?
Have the president come up here

monoplane was headed back for
the fold today.
The plane disappeared from
Barry's Sky Harbor airport here
Monday morning. It was landed
several hours later at Hillsboro,
Ore., hut Its pilot didn't stick
around to be identic -d.
The same plane was stolen a
year ago and recovered In a farm
er's field near Omak.
It won't return in as good shape
this time. The sheriff at Hills
boro said the plane landed on a
farmer's field to isk for gas and
then crashed upside down, on the
take-off. He aid two men walked
away from the damaged plane.

(.V) Last night's demonstra
tionwhich so tne Dixie delegates
were betting was longer than the
one Mr. Truman will receive
when he wins the party's presi
dential nomination Wednesday
made some quick converts.
Robert E. Hannegan, former
Democratic national chairman
who helped put Mr. Truman on
the ticket In 1944, said it looked
to him as though the demonstra
tion "has decided the Issue" for
Barkley.
Clinton P. Anderson, former
secretary of agriculture, told a
reporter he doesn't think the
Barkley show would have been
allowed to go on so long If the
president had been set against
having the Kentuckian for his
running mate.
Hannegan and others had been
reported e king a younger and
more New Dealish candidate to
run with the president.
The demonstration even had
Its effect on F. J. Hague, cast as
one of the die-hards still looking
around for another candidate.
A reporter asked him what he
thought of Barklev's chancel.
"What the hell," Hague re-
?lied, "you're not stupid, are you?
ou saw that demonstration
didn't you?"
Barkley touched off the demon
stration for himself with a rip
snorting attack on the Republi
cans. , He brought tne house down
with a sally at Gov. Thomas E.
Dewey, the GOP nominee, who
called in his acceptance speech
for a house cleaning to sweep
the cobwebs out of Washington.
"When the Democratic party
took over the government of the
United States 16 years ago." the
white clad, perspiring Kentuck
ian roared, "even the spiders
were so weak that they could not
weave a cobweb In any depart
ment of the government of the
United States.''
The delegates liked It and they
stood up and yelled.
When the senator finished a
few minutes later, a palpably
manufactured demonstration be
gan for him. A sweating delegate
whipped Into the air a sign pro
claiming "Barkley for Vice-President."
The march was on to the
tune of "My Old Kentucky
Home."
