On Royalty's
Sunday Acts
' By DeWITT MacKENZIE
AP Foreign Affairs Analyst
From the sturdy land of high
lands and purple heather, where
folk r-r-roll their r's and r-r-re-member
the Sabbath, comes word
that the Scottish Association of
the Lord's Day Observance
Society has sent Prime Minister
Attlce a telegram recording in
part:
"We feel constrained to ex
press our profound regret that
the itinerary arranged for their
royal highnesses, Princess Eliza
beth and the Duke of Edinburgh
(Prince Philip), while on their
official visit to Paris, included at
tendance at racing, theatre and
night club dancing during the
Lord's Day."
"Too strong mustard? Well
whether we agree with this re
buke, or feel that it's a wee bit
austere, there are many people
who will find it encouraging to
encounter such a staunch stand
for religion, especially in the face
of the world-wide Communist
drive to deprive humanity of a
God.
Of course, probably nobody
claims that the charming lady,
who one day likely will be queen,
and her husband committed any
terrible sin by their activities on
Sunday. However, members of
the royal family do have a mighty
influence von the habits of the
rank and 'file, and must expect
criticism at times. For royalty
isn't immune from the afflictions
of ordinary man, as witness that
Princess Margaret Rose, sister of
the heiress presumptive to the
throne, is suffering with measles.
Scots Deeply Religious
The Scots as a whole are in
tensely religious, as I have ob
served during many visits to the
land of my paternal ancestors.
The Sabbath is a day for worship
and contemplation. Scots who be
lieve in the old time religion
have no place for sports or rec
reation on Sunday.
Why, the average Scot won't
indulge in golf on Sunday, though
he loves the game so much that
he uses a golf club for a cane
so that he always will be ready
for play. Many even frown on
whistling as too frivolous.
I used to fish for trout in Scot
land, and one of the first rules
I ran up against was that there
was no fishing on the Sabbath.
I recall one Cambridge student
who sneaked out on a Sunday
and did a bit of fishing. He was
ostracized by all the guides at
his headquarters until he finally

begged forgiveness and promised

But that religious austerity isn't
confined to Scotland. You find
the same things in parts of Eng
land. And we don't have to go so
far afield as the British Isles to
find religious zeal. There's plenty
of it right here in the United
States throughout most of the
world, for that matter1. Even
those who aren't intensely re
ligious believe in the Supreme
Being and the hereafter.
Pilot Blamed in Crash
That Killed Gov. Snell
WASHINGTON, May 20 UP)
The Civil Aeronautics Board said
today an air crash in which Gov.
Earl Snell of Oregon was killed
last Oct. 28 probably resulted
from the pilot's inability to fly
"blind."
The CAB said its inquiry show
ed the small plane, en route from
Klamath Falls to Adel, Ore.,
flew into a heavy rain which
limited visibility. The pilot, Clif
ford W. Hoague, lacked "training
and experience required to safely
control the airplane without ref
erence to the ground," the board
said.
All four persons aboard the
plane were killed, including
Konert s. rarreii, uregon secre
tary of state, and Marshall E.
Cornett, president of the state
senate.
The pilot had flown 5,900 hours.
His record showed five previous
accidents and two penalties for
violating rules.
