Farmers Urged To
Join Program For
Soil Conservation
Just ordinary Oregon soil will
contain enough of the three com
mon soil elements, nitrogen, phos
phorus, and potash, to have a
current market value of $i,500 to
$2,500 per acre, and this week,
May 2 through 8, has been des
ignated "Soil Conservation Week"
to point out the problems in con
junction with maintaining this
soil fertility, states J. Roland
Parker, county agent.
Meanwhile the loss of only
one-quarter If an inch of Oregon
topsoil represents a loss of $65
to $75 worth of nitrogen, phos
phorus and potash. In terms of
common crops, this quarter inch
of lost soil with its three elements
represents enough plant food to
produce 10 tons of alfalfa, 360
bushels of wheat, or two tons of
clover seed.

showed nearly twice the acreage
of land in crops for Douglas
County as reported in the 1945
census. Much of the acreage no
longer farmed is idle and grow
ing up to brush due to former op
erators failing to maintain the
fertility of the soil, states Parker.
Continued cropoing without re
turning anything to the land to
maintain fertility resulted in a
decline in yields to where returns
did not pay operating costs.
The government, recognizing
the necessity to maintain produc
tion of food crops, authorized a
soil bonscrvation program and
provided funds to assist farmers
in carrying out soil conservation

farmers are taking advantage of
the financial assistance provided
under the agricultural conserva
tion, according to Parker, to build
up the fertility of their land, con
serve water resources and develop
drainage systems.

European shipments.

Production of dairy and poultry
equipment, feed cutters and horse
drawn equipment has been high
and may decline but it is expect
ed that production will be ade
quate to meet requirements.
Incomplete reports on 1947 pro
duction indicate a total produc
tion of farm machines about one
third higher than in 1946 and
about double the 1935-39 average.
Wheel tractor production reached
520,000 units as compared with
255,000 in 1946 and the previous
high mark of 313,000 in 1941.
Farm machinery exports In
1947 also were at a high level,
accounting for about 18 percent
of the total production, Including
industrial tractors. Exports in
cluded 80,000 wheel tractors, 15,
000 garden tractors and 12,000
crawlers. About two-thirds of the
crawlers were for non-farm use.
Total U. S. production included
420,000 wheel, 166,000 garden and
38,000 crawler type tractors.

countries over 1947 while exports
to non-European countries may
remain about the same. The do
mestic and foreign demand for
crawler tractors and large wheel
diesel type or those adapted to
heavy fuel Is expected to remain
strong and the supply situation
"relatively tight."
