? Oakland to Vote On
Proposed Site For
New High School
OAKLAND Proposal for the
purchase of a site for a new high
school building here will be
filaced before the voters of Oak
and School District No. 1 April
19, it was reported by C. W. Man
ning, chairman of the school
board.
The site that has been selected.
Manning said, lies on the north
edge of Oakland, partly within
the city limits and the remainder
adjoining the city. The tract is
10 acres in extent.
The site was chosen by the
people of the Oakland School
District as the "most suitable"
for a new high school building,
as well as being approved by the
representatives of the State De
partment of Education, Manning
said.
As soon as the grounds are pur
chased, the board will call a spe
cial election for a vote on a bond
issue, to cover the costs of the
proposed new high school. A
contract would be let soon alter
the special election, so that an
early start could be made on con
struction. The new high school bulldlni;
will include a gymnasium and
modernly-equipped work shop.
Estimated cost of the structure,
as well as of other proposed
buildings, has been placed at
$275,000.
Manning said it may be neces
sary to add to the present school
building to care for increased en

Substitute For Meatless
Tuesday Proves Success
NEW YORK, UP) Many of
New York's biggest and most
popular eating places, experi
menting on a substitute for meat
less Tuesdays, have been reduc
ing the number of meat dishes on
the menus by 40 per cent while
serving meat every day.
The Society of Restaurants re
ported that the three-month-old
experiment has been a success.
Paul Henkel, president, told a
meeting of the society the new
plan encourages wider use of
meat substitutes and reduces
waste.
Henkel urged that the U. S.
Department of Agriculture adopt
the plan nationally to replace
meatless Tuesdays as a conserva
tion measure. 1

Caution
Seeking Alaska
Fish Industry Jobs
WASHINGTON (P) Don't go
to Alaska looking for a fishing
industry job, says the Fish and
Wildlife Service, unless:
A. You have a definite offer.
B. You have enough money to
get home on if work is not avail
able. It will also help, the agency
cautions, if you have experience
in that line. .
A service publication, prepared
by Paul Elliott of the Commer
cial Fisheries Division, points out
that most canneries do their hir
ing in March or April, usually in
Seattle.
Workers hired at Seattle re
ceive transportation and travel
time pay at the cannery's ex
pense. Most canneries provide
monthly employes with room and
board, and hire them from two
to five months in the summer
and early fall.
Wages vary from $191 to $376
a month for cannery and culi
nary workers, up to S317 to $578
a month for machinists, electri
cians and carpenters. The 48-hour
week is customary.
"People experienced in fishing
or in the work of the canneries
are now much more readily avail
able than they were during the
war years," Elliott says. He adds
that the cost of food and lodging
in Alaska is from 25 to 30 per
cent higher than in the United
States.
In regard to fishing, as dis
tinguished from cannery work,
Elliott adds:
"In most cases hours are long,
work hard and Income moderate.
"Very often the fishermen ac
tually lose money when the fish
ing or marketing conditions are
poor. Furthermore, seasickness is
often a problem.
"The reluctance of the captain
of individual fishing vessels to
hire inexperienced personnel is
not surprising. The crew must be
a well integrated team if the
fishing is to pay.
"Anyone entering the fishery
for the first time must usually
expect low earnings for the first
two or three seasons."

1. It takes power, and lota of it, to push millions of
telephone calls through our complex equipment every
day. We buy our electricity, as you do, from public serv
ice sources. But to make sure calls keep going through
in emergencies, we have many motor-driven standby
generators to supply our own power when necessary.

2. Giant batteries... or many smaller ones... catch the
"juice" and release it as the direct current that sends
your voice over our system. The number of calls we're
handling today makes even these huge reserves run down
quickly. They must be charged continually from public
power sources or our own emergency generators.
3. When you pick up your telephone, you put electricity
to work as it gives your voice a lift along wires and
through switching panels. It takes little power to handle
one call. But handling millions takes a lot. It makes us
one of the West's big users of electricity. And it all adds
up as part of our cost of furnishing telephone service.
4. Your telephone is more valu
able today than ever before. For since
1940, telephones on the Coast have
increased 753. Today you can reach
more people... more people can get in
touch with you. Each new telephone
added makes your telephone a more
valuable servant.
