of 22 SS (Elite Guard) officers
charged with killing at least
a million Jews, oypsies, Com
munists partisans and "Asiatic
inferiors" during Germany's in
vasion of Russia.
The judgment was handed
down by Presiding Judge Michael
A. Musmanno of Pittsburgh, Pa.,
Judge Richard D. Dixon of
North Carolina and Judge John
J. Speight of Alabama in the so
called "EInsatz Commando" case,
which has been called the Dig
est murder trial in history.
The count said, in shocked
language, that the case was "be
yond the experience of normal
man."
The opinion came In two parts.
The section read yesterday found
that the slaylngs had been com
mitted, and proved by SS records;
that none of the defendants could
plead superior orders, else Hitler
would be the only war criminal.

killings by his group of trigger
men, include five SS generals,
five colonels, six lieutenant colo
nels, three majors and three

"No writer of murder fiction
can expect to conjure up a plot
which will schock the sensibilities
as much as the stark drama of
these sinister bands," the court
said.
The EInsatz groups were or
ganized with one order from Hit
ler to erase racial underslrablcs,
particularly Jews.
"Whole categories of people
were to be killed without truce,
without investigation, without
pity, tears or r e m o r s e," the
opinion said.

Bloodhound Aids
In Nab of Fugitive

REEDSPOKT Efficiency of
blodhounds in tracking escaped
criminals was demonstrated at
Woahink Lake in Lane County
Wednesday afternoon, when El
mer Francis Burnett, an escaped
prisoner, wanted in Washington
County, Ore., and also at Kelso,
Wash., on a forgery charge, was
speedily recaptured by Queenie,
a bloodhound owned and trained
by Deputy Sheriff A. A. Eckhardt
of Douglas County, and Sgt. R.
M. Miles and Charles C. Johnson
of tiie State Police, all of Reeds
port. Burnett had been arrested by
State Police Officer Albright of
Florence there late Tuesday eve
ning. He was turned over to
Deputy Sheriff Carlson of Lane
County to be taken to the county
Jail at Eugene. Carlson took the
prisoner to his home at Florence
for the night and locked him In
a spare room, evidently failing
to handcuff or leg-iron the prison
er, who, during the early morning
hours, escaped from the officer's
home through the bedroom win
dow. State officers at Florence were
speedily notified of the escape
and at once got in touch with
Sgt. Miles, asking for his as
sistance and the use of "Queenie"
in the search for the fugitive,
who had been reported seen near
the old CCC camp at Woahink
Lake.
Deputy Sheriff Eckhardt was
in Roseburg on official business,
but "Queenie" was on the lob
and Sgt. Miles and Officer John
son and the hound were on their
way to the scene at 12:15 p. m.
At 4 p. m. they were again in
Reedsport with the fugitive, who
was locked in the Reedsport
jail. .
Arriving at the place where
the fugitive was last seen at
Woahink Lake, Queenie was im
mediately placed on scent and
within a very short time had run
down the escapee, who was cap
tured by the officers and hand
cuffed. Queenie, a gift from Senator
Guy Cordon to Sgt. Miles, was
shipped here from Washington,
D. C. about two years ago, Miles
turned the dog over to Eckhardt
who trained and cared for her.
