Farmers Unite To
Battle Coming
Cricket Invasion

It's almost Mormon cricket
time again in central Oregon, but
now the farmers are ready to
fight them with something more
than sea gulls and prayers.
The farmers in Morrow. Gil
liam and Sherman counties the
worst cricket spot in this part of
the country have formed a cric
ket control association. Thev will
spread poison bait, and will use
airplanes to spread it if needed.
Federal insect experts say that
700 square miles will be infested
this year. A year ago, when the
invasion was serious, 500 square
miles were infested.
The crickets are hatching now.
Soon the adults, one to two inches
long, will begin their march of
a quarter of a mile a day, eating
everything in their path.
Robert W. Every, Oregon State
College Extension authority on
Insects and bugs, thinks the as
sociation's idea will work. Baiting
stopped the invasion last year,
but it wasn't started early enough
to prevent serious damage.
Milk Spur Still Hazard
Chemistry has found a wav to
make cows give more mlik. "But
It might ruin the cow.
It is a drug called protomone.
About 15 grams of it can be
given to Bossy each day in her
regular diet.
It makes the average cow give
15 to 30 per cent more milk, and
some cows give as much as 72
per cent more. But it doesn't
even work on some cows.
The drug works like a thyroid
gland hormone, its effect being
to speed up th cows machinery.

spread use of it because a cow
might lose a lot of weight and
literally burn herself out. A lot
more has to be discovered about
the new drug.
Cattle Give New Worry
The migration of drought
stricken cattle from California
to Oregon has given OSC ex
tension livestock men some more
diseases to worry about. They
also fear Ana Plasmosis, a blood
disease spread by ticks; Anthrax,
and Red Water.
They already had warned about
Bang's and hoof and mouth dis
eases. Foxes Now Costly Pet
Clackamas county farmers want
some hound dogs imported into
their population. The foxes are
killing pheasants, turkeys, chick
ens, lambs and other small live
stock .
County agent John Inskeep,
Oregon City, says a long time

in for the amusement of the hunt

you want a little more for your
used car you'll have to wait an
other six weeks. If you want top
price for your used "car you prob
ably will get it about June 15.
Whatever else may be said
about the used car market it is
not falling apart. It had a
tough winter but prices are mov
ing upward, especially for Chev
rolets, Fords and Ply mouths. Late
models of these makes still arc
bringing more than list prices
in many instances.
All indications are the early
summer weeks will bring a heavy
demand for used cars. The pre
sent rate of new car production
although rapidly nearing pre-war
levels, will not fill the coming
summer demand. That means
the used car lots will get a lot of
business. Especially between
June 1 and the end of July.
In these two months the factor
ies may turn out 700,000 passen
ger cars; but barring an unex
pected cut in buving power, 5,000,
000 persons will be seeking auto
mobiles. Most of them will want
cars in June, July and August.
For the most part they'll have
to get them from the used car
lots.

Rural Area Traffic
Deaths Increase
Pointing to a definite trend in
which reduction of rural area
traffic fatalities is not keeping
pace with urban decreases, Secre
tary of State Newbry has called
upon Oregon motorists to apply
the same principles of safety to
both city and country driving.
"In 1944, rural areas were re
sponsible for only 61 per cent of
all traffic deaths," the secretary
stated. "In 19-15, this figure in
creased to 67 per cent, in 1946 to
63 per cent, and in 1947 to 79 per
cent. We have now reached the
point where 4 out of 5 deaths oc
cur on the open highway, remov
ed from any city or town."
