Files Suit Against
Group of Probers

perior Court yesterday against
the Legislatures un-American
Activities Committee as the
group's preliminary public hear
ings drew near an end.
Pennock's complaint said that
statements made public by the
committee on Jan. 10 were un
true. The suit was filed by Atty.
John Caughlan.
On Jan. 10. the committee,
headed by Hep. Albert Canwell
R.-.Spukane), announced its
planned investigation of the
Washington Pension Union.
The statements against which
Pennock complained were made
in a public announcement of the
committee's plans.
At that time, Lanwell criticized
unnamed leaders of the pension
union has having "subverted the
interests" of "bona fide recipi
ents" of state pension funds.
Canwcll's statement also said
that Uie broad aim of the Legis
lative Committee during Its in
vestigation and hearings would
be to "expose the pattern and
purpose ol the Communist con
spiracy In the State of Washing
ton and its cooperative relation
ship with the world-wide Com
munist conspiracy . . ."
At that time Pennock replied:
'The committee has with
amazing candor publicly aban
doned any pretense of fairness,
since in Its preliminary state
ment It has already announced
what its findings, supposedly as
a result of these hearings, are
going to be."
He charged that the commit
tee was "illegal and without con
stitutional authority."

tion. I thought, uerhaps, you
would be interested in the find
ings. The results clearly indicate
that you are very staunch sup
porter of the whole conservation
program. We have found at least
3d of your editorials during 19-17
dealing with some form of conser
vation. Klsh and game leads with
16 editorials, sustained yield, tim
tter conservation and utilization
are second with 13 editorials,
while fire control, recreation, and
water conservation have each
been the suli(ect of two editorials.
You probably know that almost
every editorial or news item
which deals with forestry or con
servation is sent in to a central
news clipping bureau. The more
outstanding articles and editorials
are reprinted In a news clipping
sheet which is distributed
throughout the nation. A good
many of your editorials have ap

U. C. L. A. at Los Angeles, and a
native of the State of Washing
ton. He resigned as pastor of the
First Baptist Church at San Ber
nardino, Calif., to accept his pres
ent position. In four years he had
had more than 600 new members
join his church. His brother
serves as a missionary in the Con
go In Africa, and a sister is in
China.
Rev. Mr. Kopp will preach at
both services Sunday and at the
Sunday School opening exercises.
He will also speak to youth
groups Sunday evening. Monday
through Wednesday evenings he
will instruct a group of visitors
and preach again on Thursday
and Friday nights. He will re
main over Sunday, Feb. 15.

rial customers, but said there had
been no closings on an industry
wide basis.
There were unconfirmed re
ports that Northern California
power companies were consider
ing shutdowns in the lumber,
mining and gold dredging indust
ries throughout Northern Calif
ornia und Southern Unon. .
A Pacific Gas and Klectric
Company spokesman here said
his firm was making no industry
wide shutdowns.
'We are pursuing our announc
ed policy of negotiating agree
ments with individual customers
for curtailed operations only
where the customers' schedules
will permit, he declared. These
are with full consent of each
customer and In no case are industry-wide.
He did not know what policy
was being pursued by California
