Is Just today with circles under
Its eyes.
Yet many people (to on believ
- ing that the future is sure to be
better than the past like a small
boy who thinks the Ice cream
cone he hasn't the money to buy
would taste a lot better than the
one he Just ate.
Why? Is there anything a sen
sible man can admit about the fu
ture except that it probably lies
ahead?
But by Ouija board and crystal
ball, by tea leaves and horo
scopes, the effort still goes on to
plot the happy life in the world
to be. Someone even has figured
out a way in night clubs here to
forecast coming events by the
shapes ice cubes assume as they
melt in the glass. The usual con
clusion by the hyDnotized patron
is that it is about time to buy an
other drink.
The other day members of the
Advertising Club of New York
sealed into the cornerstone of
their new building a number of
predictions on how Amricans will
live in faraway 2004. the year
the club celebrates its hundredth
anniversary.
There was little held out attrac
tive enough to make a middle
aged man of todav want to hang
around overtime just to greet
these dubious benefits of the
twenty-first century.
Here's Clothti Forecast
A man who canvassed clothing
designers, for example, came up
with this soul-clabbering portrait
of the dame of tomorrow:
"Women will carry their own
little flying machines in Jewelled
handbags and fly through the air
with irridescent wings. Clothes
will contain their own air-conditioning
units.
"The great immodesty will be
public exposure of eyes. Men and
women will dress verv much
alike. Clothes will be mechanical
ly contrived and electrically con
trolled." Isn't that something to look
forward to! Ladies flapping about
like Junebugs, flying blind be
cause they don't dare show their
glimmers for fear of losing their
reputation! Or maybe glaring at
you through a periscope because
you splashed mud on their rain
bow wings.

Of course this strange new
world will probably have other
compensations to make it more
liveable for people afraid to go
out In a storm in their 2004-mod-el
electrically-wired raincoat un
less it has a lightning rod. too.
Racehorses that you la" $2 on
will probably be guaranteed to
run on wheels Instead of their
knees. Paychecks will be of rub
ber and stretch enough to pay all
bills, including the one for jun
ior's new atom-powered helicopt
er. Golf will have all its temper
fraying uncertainties removed, as
it will be plaved with balls equip
ped with built-in radar that al
ways assure a hole-in-one aver
age. Oh, the future will have its ad
vantages, and our antiseptic
orogeny will probably enjoy it.
But we'll stick with the dirty old
grrnvbit world of todav. The
hardest thing about any life is
getting used to it and we're used
to this one.

Ohmer, chairman of the Alaska
Game Commission said today.
Ohmer, a businessman of
Petersburg, 100 miles south of
Juneau, and a resident of Alaska
32 years, flew o Washington to
"Bend the ear of everyone in
Congress" on territorial wildlife
problems.
"Alaska gets $175,000 a year
for game law enforcement and
fish and wildlife administration
less than any state," Ohmer told
reporters.
"With $200,000 additional, we
could just barely hold the line on
our game resources. We could
double our game law enforce
ment, which now consists of
seven officers for an area one
fifth the size of the United States.
