iary Sewing Club will meet Wed
nesday, January 14, at two o'

street to sew and tie a quilt for
the Welfare Center. All members
are ured to bo present.
Mrs. Myrtle Olmscheid, depart
ment welfare chairman, has re
ported on the many beautiful
gifts received at the center from
different auxiliaries, which were
given to needy families during
the holidays. She also reported
on her recent trip to the Child
Welfare Conference for the West
ern Division at I'hoenix, Arizona,
and stated that it was most Inter
esting to hear of the reports
from other auxiliary unit from
various states regarding their

SPEAKER AT JUNIOR
WOMAN'S CLUB MEETING
Mrs. Howard Marsh was the
speaker at the meeting of the
junior woman s ciun Monday
evening at the armory. Mm
Marsh gave a very Interesting re
port on her recent visit of In
spection as a representative of
the club to the Woodburn Boys
Training School. All Junior Wo
man's Clubs in the state have
had the school as one of their
major projects to assist during
the year. Mrs. Marsh was ac
companied on the trip by the club
president and the club treasurer,
Mrs. Carl Wassom and Mrs. Paul
Cai-y. They accompanied mem
bers of the Corvallis Junior Wo
man's Club on the inspection tour
IX'cember 3.
Plans were made to assist with
the annual drive for funds for
the Inlantile Paralysis Founda
tion. Mrs. Wassom, president, had
charge of the meeting.
Preceding the regular meeting
a talk was given by Mrs. Hav
er, representative for the tiirl
Scouts, asking the club's endorse
ment in organising Girl Scouts

A report was made on the
Christmas party given bv the
club for the patients at the Coun
ty home. The club members make
cookies every month to send to
the home and plans are being
made to remember patients on
their birthdays.
At the close of the meeting
a social hour was enjoved and
the hostesses, Mrs. Carl Duncan.
Mrs. Bruce Lattin and Mrs. Wal
lor I.ake served lovely refresh
ments from a prettily appointed
table.
The club will hold a potluck
dinner at seven-thirty o'clock the
evening of January 19 at the
armory. The hostess committee
includes Miss June Clayton, Miss
Ethel Van Voorst. Miss Jean
Turner and Mrs. Robert Elliott,

ORGANIZED WEDNESDAY
A class In art Instruction, un
der the sponsorship of the exten
sion department of University of
Oregon, with university credit for
the course, will open Wednesday
evening, January 14, at seven
o clock at room Jiu at the junior
High School.
.Miss Jean Sutherlln, Eugene,
instructor In art. will be the class
teacher. The full course, which
will cost $10.50, will continue for
either ten or twelve weeks. The
class is open to all persons Inter
ested In taking the course. It will
be decided at Wednesday night s
meeting, what day of the week
meetings will be held In the fu
ture. It is hoped that both an aft
ernoon and evening class w ill be
arranged.

DISTRICT, NO. 30, TO
HOLD CONFERENCE FRIDAY
Mrs. George Jackson, president
of Umpqua Unit, American I'g-
lon Auxiliary, has been notified
that the District, Io. 10, con
ference will take place in Rose
burg, Friday, January 16. After
noon sessions are planned for
both the Legion and auxiliary
holding separate sessions. Mrs.
Jackson has requested every
memlier to be present at the aux
iliary session.
There will be a Joint banquet
at six thirty o'clock at the Ump
qua Hotel for Legionnaires and
Auxiliary mcmbors, their hus
bands and wives and Invited
friends. A social will follow. Re
servations for tickets for the
banquet must be made by calling
5K3-R or 172-J or may be purch
ased at the banquet.
Visiting department officers,
local unit officers and past presi
dents are requested to wear semi
formal dress. Others attending
may also dress semi-formal if
they desire. Other lady guests
are privileged to wear street
length dresses.

Lutheran Church was held at the

scripture and the business ses
sion was conducted by the presi
dent, Mrs. Carl Lundeen.

Choose Navy Course
Chief Petty Officer William D.
Forhan, of the Navy recruiting
office in Roseburg. said today that
according to authority received
from the Bureau of Naval Person
nel, it is now possible for high
school graduates to ennst in iavy
trade schools ol their choice.
Sixteen schools were listed in
the directive, which stated that
quotas lor the various schools
would be assigned in the near fu
ture. Following Is a list of the
schools: Cooks and bakers, elec
trician's mates, machinist's mates
ishop), motor machinist's mates.
radiomen, metalsmlths, yeoman,
storekeepers, sonar operators,
fire controlmen, radarmen, pat
ternmakers, electronic material,
aviation electronic material, basic
submarine, aviation fundamental.
Forhan stated that it has al
ways been the policy of the Navy
to attempt to let men choose the
school they wanted to attend, but
that this is the first time in naval
hisory that applicants would be
allowed to choose their own
school.
