Senate Chaplain
Tailors Words To
Suit Occasion

WASHINGTON Scottish Dr.
Peter Marshall, chaplain of the
U. S. Senate, is a man of few
words. His prayers at each day's
opening session last not more
than two or three minutes.
A recent example:
"Forgive us all that we talk too
much and think too little. For
give us all that we worry so oft
en and pray so seldom."
The tall good-looking clergy
man, who is also pastor of tlie
New York Avenue Presbyterian
Church, says that as far as he
knows there is no "directive" for
what his prayer before the Sen
ate should be.
"The prayer," he says, "is an
expression of the needs we all
feel." He tries to key the words
he offers as much as possible to
the problems confronting the law
makers. On the opening of the special
session called by President Tru
man last November he prayed:
"O God, our FathT, we pray
for Thy wisdom and Thy guid
ance for the members of this
body as they meet in this troubled
hour to consider what this nation
should do about hunger that
knows no Dolitios and want that
will not wait.
"We cannot escape history.
That we have found out. May we
also discover that we cannot
evade responsibility. By Thy Holy
Spirit awaken the conscience of
America that our people may be
willing to put humanity first."
The chaplain says he is not dis
appointed by the small number
of senators present to bow their
heads as he delivers the prayers
before the Senate roll call.
'They know they are being
prayed for, not only In the Sen
ate, but by the whole people," he
says.
He prayed recently that the
faith of the senators In the ef
ficacy of prayer be kept strong.
There are times, he says, when
guidance asked in difficult de
cisions "has not always come
when we thought it should come."
"Forgive us for thinking, there
fore, that Thou art unwilling to
help us In our dilemmas, or that
there Is nothing Thou canst do,"
he asked.
"Remind us. Our Father, that
when we plug In an electric Iron
and it fails to work, we do not
conclude that electricity has lost
Its power, nor do we plead with
the iron."
Dr. Marshall says he doesn't
believe "God has any political af
filiations." Dr. Marshall was born In Coat
bridge, Scotland, speaks with a
soft burr. His first two pasto
rates were in Atlanta, where he
lived nine years before coming
to Washington to be pastor of the
Presbyterian Church which Abra
ham Lincoln attended. The Re
publicans elected him chaplain a
year ago.

Intents Now Part
Of Soviet Empire

Young King Mihai's abdication
of his throne has no mysterious
significance, for Romania already
was under the domination of Mos
cow and he was monarch in name
only by the grace of Bolshevists
until he had served their purpose
and they were ready to declare
another Red republic.
Mihai's personal tragedy mere
v represents the final step in the
grand coup which the Russians
have executed In takino over Ro
mania for, to all intents, it is now
a part of the Soviet empire. And
they've secured a fine prize.
Romania is rich agriculturally,
as is testified by her great fields
of corn and other grains, and she
has petroleum, perhaps a doubt
ful asset for a small country with
powerful neighbors. But she is
even more important strategic

Not only does Romania have a
coastline on the Black Sea but
she houses the mouths of the
mighty Danube, which winds
back across the Balkans and on
Into Central Europe a navigable
river which is canable of handlin"
heavy traffic and thus is one of

militarily and commercially.
Moreover, she lies up against the
Russian border, and thus her po
litical complexion and Interna
tional relations are of vast mo
ment to Moscow,

persistence with which the Com
munists pursue the hunt. As far
back as 1930 they were causing
unrest In that country', and the
authorities uncovered a wide
spread Soviet espionage organiza
tion. Some 140 alleged Red agents
were arrested In various cities.
These underground activities con
tinued until the late war gave
birth to the golden age of Bol
shevism In Eastern Europe.
As we check up on former Ro
manian monarchs I'm afraid we
can't give them perfect marks in
stewardship and denortment. But
Mihal who is only 26 just a
"oungster as kings go has been
showing a sturdiness of charac
ter which endeared him to his
people and might have made him
a great ruler if he had been given
a chance. He has been so brave
In trying to carry out his duties
In the face of personal danger
that one can understand the af
fection in which his subjects held
him.
So far as courage goes, Mihai's
colorful lather has "lenty of it,
only he would seem to have di
rected too much of It In wrong
directions. The former King
Carol, now living in Portugal
with his wife she who was Mag
da Lupescu will be re orded as
one of the notable royal lovers of
history. At the age of 21 during
the First World War, Carol elop
ed with a Romanian orovlncial
commoner, Zid Lambrino, and
married her, to the consternation
of the whole country. He even
wanted to abandon his rights to
the throne but his father. King
Ferdinand, finally got the mar
riage annulled.
Then Carol married lovely
Princess Helen of Greece and she
is Mihai's mother. However, Carol
soon fell violently in love with
Madame Lupescu, abandoned his
throne for her and was divorced
by his wife. To give Carol credit,
he has stuck to Magda through
thick and thin, and thev were
married recently In Brazil when
It seemed thut she was about to
die.
I fear me that Carol got his
great-lover traits Irom his dad,
King Ferdinand. A friend of
mine who knew Ferdinand well
told me that his majesty had a
warm penchant for Romania's
beautiful Gypsy girls and was
quite content to leave many af
fairs of state In the hends of hit
very able and world famous wife

Triad's Feet Hurt
After a long, hard day's work on
the firm, Thad's Ides of how to
spend an evening is to take off his
shoes, and relax with a mellow
glass of beer.

After being in the house all day,

misiua likes an occasional temper
ate glass of beer herself. And Thsd
finds it's pleassnter to enjoy his
beer with good companions, rather

will discuss disease problems and
methods of control, and Mr. Ben
nion will speak on the market
outtlook for 19-W, production
trends, management practices
and experimental work being car
ried on by the poultry department
at the college. Tuesday, January
13, will be devoted to production
of turkeys, market outlook for
1948 and management of breed
ers and market birds.
A special meeting has been ar
ranged for poultry producers at
Azalea and Glendale at the Azalea
Grange hall on Monday evening
at 8:00 o'clock, states County
Agent Parker, owing to the dis
tance from Roseburg and the
growing Importance of the poul
try industry in these communities.
