Oregon's Closed
Fire Season Ends
Termination of the closed fire
season at midnight, Oct. 17, by
order of Governor Snell was re
ported today by Fred Southwick,
district warden of the Douglas
Forest Protective Association.
The governor's order suspended
the permit requirements for un-
! regulated use of fire until the
season is ciosea again in i:tn.
,With official termination of the
fire season, Southwick said the
Douglas Forest Protective Asso
ciation has had Its most success
ful fire season with respect to
the number of fires occurring
and acreage burned.
There was a total of 33 fires
in the association's protective
area. Twenty-seven were less
than a quarter-acre; three, from
a quarter-acre to 10 acres In ex
tent, and three of more than 10
acres.
Actual acreage classed as
"burned" was negligible, as the
larger fires were confined to
logging slash, which normally
would have been burned in the
fall anyway, Southwick said.
Total damage for the season
amounted to $2,000 In felled and
bucked timber. There was no
damage to standing timber in
Douglass County this year.

Water System
Buy Considered
REEDSPORT Possibility of
purchasing the water system at
Winchester Bay, now owned by
the City of Reedsport, was dis
cussed with the city council by of
ficials of the Winchester Bay
Rural Fire District last week.
Water U furnished through a
six-inch transit line which ex
tends from the city's line from
Clear Lake to Reedsport, to the
townsite at Winchester Bav, a
distance of approximately 5,000
feet.
The recently organized fire dis
trict has 400 feet of hose, a trailer
on which to haul it, and a siren
installed at a central location. Di
rectors of (he district who attend
ed the city Council meeting said
that new hydrants are essential.
Details discussed were the price
to be asked for the distribution
system, terms, contract for the
purchase of water, etc. The tent a.
tive plan Is for the community to
purchase water from Reedsport
at a w-holosale rate, through a
meter to be installed where the
six-inch line leaves the main line.
No objections were raised to
the fire district's proposal to pur
chase the water system at Win
chester Bay. Next step will be to
determine whether the fire dis
trict can legally take the step or
whether a separate water district
must be formed.
