With Brooklyn on
Kurowski's Homer
By JOE REICLER
Associated Press Sports Writer
The St. Louis Cardinals yester
day climbed back to defeat the
league leading Brooklyn Dodgers
32, in 12 furiously fought in
nings and cut the lirooks' mar
gin back to four and a half
games. A home run smash by Ku
rowskl, broke up the game.
For two thrill-packed hours
fans had sat enthralled at the
marvelous pitching of Branca,
Brooklyn's ace hurler. At the end
of eight dramatic innings, the
Birds had only one safety off
Branca and were trailing 20.
Schoendienst, St. Louis leadofl
hitter in the ninth, walked, but
,ne l-year-old tireballer quick
ly disposed of the next two bat
ters. Then Branca whipped over
two smxes on siaugnter.
Slaughter walked. Now there
were two on and two out. Bran
ca threw two very wide pitches
to Northey and manager Burt
Shotton called on Casey.
Northey singled to score
Schoendienst and send Slaughter
to third. Jorgensen hobbled Ku
rowski's hopper and Slaughter
scored the tying run.
Kurowski's game-winning blow
his third in as many games
against the Dodgers, was 'hit off
Casey's first toss at the top of
the 12th.
Even then the Dodgers were
not beaten. Hobinson opened the
last half of the 12lh with a sin
gle. He was sacrificed to second.
Manager Dyer replaced Pollet
with Munger who before ever
making a pitch to the plate,
wheeled and threw to shortstop
Marlon to pick Robinson neatly
off second. Pinch hitter Vaughan
went out on a routine grounder
to end the game.
