Vacation Inquiries to
Oregon Set New Mark
SALEM, Ore., Aug. 21 (.fl
California, Illinois, New York
and Pennsylvania lead the na
tion in seeking Oregon vacation
information, a check of the record-breaking
number of 105,000
mail inquiries received since last
October by the State Highway
Commission travel information
department reveals.
The 105,000 sets a new all-time
record, compared with the pre
vious high of 75,000 when the
Golden Gate Exposition was a
western travel magnet in 1939.
Inquiries came in substantial
numbers from every stale in the
Union and are still being re
ceived in above-normal summer
volume, it was said today in
highway department offices.
Steelworkers in Five
B. C. Plants Walk Out
VANCOUVER, B. C. Aug. 21
(CP) Picket lines were estab
lished today as steelworkers in
five Vancouver plants went on
strike following refusal of union
workers to accept an offer from
operators of a six cents an hour
pay boost. The workers demand
wage increases of 124 cents an
hour.
Union officials said 350 men
were on strike and that another
200 plant employes had refused
to cross the picket lines.
Chinese Bandits Waylay

SHANGHAI, Aug. 21. P
The Navy announced Chief Petty
Officer Orrin D. Perry of Port
land, Ore., was beaten severely
and a civilian employee wounded
by 20 unidentified armed Chinese
who waylaid their Jeep today.
The Navy said the assailants,
wearing "unidentified uniforms,"
dragged Perry out of the Jeep
and beat him over the head with
pistols and shot George J. Rott
of Shanghai twice in Ihe thigh.
Both men were robbed. Rott
told authorities he thought one
of "Ihe soldiers was about to
shoot Perry."
Stanley J. Brint Joins
Army Air Forces
Stanley J. Brint, 17, son of
Stanley Brint, Lookingglass route
recently was accepted into the
Regular Army Air Forces at Mc
Chord Field, according to word
from T.Sgt. Woodrow W. Hal
stead, commanding the Roseburg
oltices of the Army and Air
Forces recruiting service.
Private Brint, well known in
Roseburg where he attended
High School, is now receiving his
basic training at Randolph Field,
Texas, and will be given the op
portunity lo study a technical
subject of his own choice when
his training is completed.
4-H Winners in
Canning Listed
Janice Roberts, Smilh River
Rome, Reedsport, and Marjorie
Zeller, Brockway, were judged
county winners in the senior
bread-baking and canning con
tests held in conjunction with the
fall canning achievement day at
Roseburg Senior High School
Wednesday.
Junior winners in the bread
baking and canning contest are
Carol Ann Burgin, Days Creek,
and Ann Roih. Brockway. All four
county winners will participate in
state contests to be held at the
Stale Fair on Labor Day, Sept. 1.
Forty-nine exhibits of canning
were on display for the canning
achievement day and blue rib
bon exhibits were selected
for State Fair display. In
Division I, the exhibits of Joy
Zeller, Sally and Shirley Jurak,
Brockway; Dorothy Jones, Can
yonvillc, " and Norma Nichols,
Reedsport, will be exhibited at
the Slate Fair.
Outstanding exhibits In Divi
sion II were Patricia Tuthill, Oak
land; Ann Roth, Brockway; Car
men Dysert, Lookingglass; Joan
V o o r h i e s, Lookingglass, and
Donna Wilson, Myrtle Creek.
Betty Pyritz, Smith River Route,
Reedsport, and Sandra Day, Yon
calla, exhibited the only Division
III exhibits. They will be entered
at the State Fair.
Two exhibits were displayed in
Division IV by Janice Roberts,
Smith River Route, Reedsport,
and Marjorie Zeller, Brockway.
Both were given blue ribbons and
will be entered at the Slate Fair.
In addition to canning exhibits,
there were seven clothing ex
hibits, one knitting and one cook
ing. Judge for the day's activities
was Mrs. Marion Christenson,
home demonstration agent from
Jackson County. She was assisted
by Miss Dorothea Parker, Doug
las County home demonstration
agent.
