crown, In a playoff. Monday night
they captured the title by defeat
ing Sutherlln, 8-4.

taking form last Sunday as the
Umpqiia Chiefs regained a third
place spot in defeating Ashland,
31, and Grants Pass continued to
lead the pack by walloping Med
ford's Rogues, 30-8.
Other action saw Hilt dump
Trl-City, 12-8, in a 12-inning thril
ler, while Crescent City ran over
Central Point, 7-3.
With only two games remain
ing on the original schedule, plus
rainedout makeup contests for
Grants Pass, Trl-City, Medford
and Ashland, Roseburg and Hilt
hold the distinction of being the
only clubs of the circuit to win
from Grants Pass Merchants dur
ing the season's play.

Ross, Hayamaki
Tony Ross, the Salem terror
has gotten Into plenty of diffi
culties because of the high opin
ion he holds for his own prowess
of a wrestler and fighter, and it
appears he has come to grief
again In accepting a challenge
from Sugl Hayamaki at the
Oriental's own game julitsu
wrestling. The bout will headline
Saturday's show at the Armory.
Ross pulled a "cutie" here last
Saturday night when he faked an
Injury and then turned on Haya
maki lo score the winning fall in
a semi-final match. The Oriental
grappler was more amazed at the
lack of sportsmanship displayed
by Rdss than the defeat and the
more he thought of the Incident
the more bitter he became. When
Hayamaki eventually offered
Ross a $500 bonus if he could de
feat him in a regulation judo
match, the villain accepted with
out a second thought.
Judo wrestling requires that
both men wear judo jackets with
canvas straps hanging down by
which the wrestlers throw their
opponents. There are no falls, the
contest ending only when one op
ponent Is unconscious or "tosses
in the towel." It is a real "battle
to the finish" and it looks like
Ross has undertaken quite an
assignment.
The former southeastern mid-
dleweisht boxing champion is
confident. When Matchmaker
Don Owen signed him he said, "I
can beat that Jap anytime, anv- j
place and wearing anytning
using any kind of holds." He will
have a chance to display his
prowess. Some local rlngbirds re
ported that Ross had confided in
them that he has had experience
with judo jackets and was fully
aware of what he was doing.
What Ross doesn't know, though,
is that Hayamaki claims he has
never been beaten in a judo
match.
Owen plans an outstanding
supporting program of two other
bouts. Al Szasz and Leo Karilenko
will meet in a one-fall, 20-minute
opener, and Pierre LaBelle and
Jack Kiser clash In the semi-final.
The three-star prograifi is ex
pected to attract another record
attendance.
