LOS ANGELES, May 21. ilP)

Strawberry Harvest
Periled by Hot Wave
SALEM, May 21. (IP) The
strawberry harvest in the Salem
area might be reduced by as
much as 30 per cent by the cur
rent heat wave, growers pre
dicted today.
They predicted that the harvest
might last only three or four
weeks, compared with five weeks
last year. The harvest probably
will be finished by the time
school is out, thus depriving
growers of school children to
heln pick the berries.
This has been the driest Mav
in Salem's history, with only .03
of an inch of rain so far this
month.

Merger Showdown Nears
The Senate Armed Services
Committee neared a showdown to
day on the heart of President
Truman's Army-Navy merger
plan whether there should be a
single cabinet officer to speak for
land, sea and air forces.
Across the eapitol, the House
Expenditures Committee side
tracked the unification issue to
open hearings on two other, but
far less controversial, presiden
tial plans for government reor
ganization. And Chairman Hoffman of the
House group told a reporter:
"If anyone is blocking Army
Navy unification, it is President
Truman.
"How does he expect us to get
out a unification bill when he
sends us a couple of these reor
ganizations we nave to act on in
a hurry? We've got to get them
out before July 1."
The reorganization hearings
have been scheduled to last a
week. They might run longer.
Asked whether he thought that
might mean no unification legis
lation this session, Hoffman re
plied: "I think we'll get it, all right.
But I don't know in what form."
Farm Budget Further Cut
The House Appropriations Com
mittee members reported todav
additional cuts have been recom
mended to reduce the Agriculture
Department's 1948 budget of $1.-
200,000,000 by almost 40 per cent.
The subcommittee in charge of
the bill met in closed session to
day. Members told reporters pri
vately they were asked by party
leaders to find new places in
which to make cuts.
The House Republican Steerine
Committee met early this week
and Speaker Martin reported
some members had complained
that preliminary recommenda
tions for reductions in the agri
culture bill were inadequate.
The House took an 11 per cent
whack out of President Truman's
estimates in passing a $3,469,791,
100 Navy supply bill yesterday.
